Getting so nervous

Ok, I admit it. I'm getting really nervous about my move. I have wanted and waited for this for so long...but now I'm scared. What if I don't fit in.I really don't want to come off as an ignorant, obnoxious "yank". Please, tell me I'm not going to feel like I have landed on another planet. I know things are going to be different and its going to take awhile to get accustomed to things, but will I eventually fit in and start to feel like I belong???
I'm even worried about the grocery shopping...things are so different. Oh boy, I can feel an anxiety attack coming.
Sorry for ranting, going to go listen to the football match on the computer now and try to calm down.

Where are you moving to?

I'm sure you will be fine, you sound as though you really want to fit in, just be open and welcoming and I'm sure you get a response from neighbours. If you have children it opens a lot of doors e.g. mother and toddler groups or chatting at the school gates. Let us know how you get on.:)

I get so very confused with the way towns and villages are set up there so if I get this wrong I apologise. Newcastle-Under-Lyme? Which if I am correct is in Staffordshire?

I'm sure you will fit in just fine, don't forget we're always here for you :thumbsup2

:wizard: :wizard: Good luck with your move

Mandy :)

Yes it is Staffordshire. From reading your posts you don't seem like an "ignorant, obnoxious Yank" at all. I'm sure that most people you come across will appreciate that it is difficult to move to a new country and will see that you are making an effort to fit in.

Don't worry, in no time at all you will feel as though you have been here all your life and wonder why you spent so much time stressing.

Good luck with the move. :goodvibes

i'm sure you'll be fine, as Lizzy said having kids will open a lot of doors, and if you javen't get a sociable job and you'll soon fit in fine, please keep in touch and let us know how you're getting on.

as for the geography, there are 3 countries England Scotland and Wales that are joined together and they are very seperate culturally, people are very protective about their own country and don't like it if, for instance you think Wales is part of England. (they all originally have their own language but you needn't worry about that!) they are all, in the main run by one central government based in London (England) (I won't get into the Scottish parliament just yet) Each Country has counties, like states in the US, so your town is in a county in a country. I live in Launceston, Cornwall, England. Does that make sense?
p.s. and you'll soon learn what 'football' really is :rotfl2:

It makes sense, but it just gets so confusing to me. Like, my inlaws live next door to where we will be living. So, my husband said to me, they live in Thistleberry, but others from the same neighborhood will say they live in Westlands because it sounds better?? I think thats why. Like right now he lives in Madeley...and I have always addressed his mail to Cheshire, but its actually Staffordshire.:confused3
Funny you mention that about Wales...I always considered Scotland to be its own country, but I never even considered that with Wales...until I met DH and learned rather quickly how wrong I was.:lmao:

Oh and that is what I am listening to...Stoke City and Luton!!

Hope you really enjoy your move and don't forget you always come on the DIS if you ever feel lonely.

Good luck

Susan

see? you've pretty much got the hang of it already, and there will always be people who refer to where they live under a different name as it sounds better but thats just snobbery not geography! and you call Luton and Stoke football? :rotfl2: :confused3 only kidding.

and the welsh are lovely so they won't be too hard on you once they realise you're foreign!

Oh I know they are lovely, but DH said to me...It wouldnt be appreciated by someone from Wales to be told they are English...so it was one of my first lessons.
Lol...and Stoke is my husband's team so I want to try to follow as much as possible. I must be the only person who actually fell asleep AT a football match. Last summer after working all day, flying overnight and not sleeping, grabbing some breakfast, and off the the match...I was sooo tired. I fell asleep at Britannia Stadium in the middle of it.:rolleyes1

When do you actully move over?

Susan

Two weeks. I am flying over either on the 1st or the 3rd of March unless the flights are full. I am flying on a friend's flying privilges. I used to work for an airline and have many friends who still do, so I get a big discount but can only fly when there are seats available. I am really so excited to see England in the Spring and to start my new life...but it really is stressful. I know once Im there and with my husband, I should be fine.
Believe me, I will be on here often.

It is only natural to be nervous but I am sure you will be fine. It sounds like you will be able to get back to visit your family fairly easily so you should not feel too issolated.

Are you having a farewell party before you leave?

Susan

I think we will have a small little get together for my family and close friends. I have so much to do before I go, I dont even want to think about it.:headache:
Of course instead of doing any packing, I am sitting here dising and listening to the end of the match.

just wanted to say...don't worry :grouphug: we brits may seem boring and stuck-up but really we are very nice
:)

The 1st March is when DH came to the UK to stay! I'm sure that everything will go really well for you and you'll soon settle right in :goodvibes In fact if we ever talk about moving back to CA its always me that is pushing to move back! :)

I'm sure you'll be fine :goodvibes You'll be with your DH and there is always someone around on here if you fancy a chat :thumbsup2

:) Hi everyone. Its been quite awhile since I have been able to post as our internet connection has been and still is out at home. On top of that...our pc blew up the other day:rotfl: . So anyways I am at work on this beautiful Sunday and figured I would post an update.
Things have been pretty great, although when I first got here, I have to admit I was pretty miserable and sad. I seem to be fitting in ok...although there are a few things that still throw me...like the amount of :drinking1 . I cant even imagine trying to drink some of what our friends at the pub drink. And then there is the whole :drive: issue. The roads are so narrow here and everyone seems to be in such a hurry all the time.
I'm still adjusting to life here, and everyone has been great in our village. I had a short trip back to the States last weekend for my daughter and neices First Holy Communion and to visit my dad who is quite ill in the hospital. It was a nice trip, but hard to see my dad so sick.
Anyways, thought I would give you all a quick update...back to work now, just had some customers walk into the store.
Have a beautiful Sunday.
