Getting sick at Disney

My son has a very bad case of strep throat. He isn't going to WDW - just me and my boyfriend are. However, I've been taking care of him and as careful as I have been I'm afraid I'm going to get it too (I have every other time I have taken care of him). I'm very susceptible to it and have been a handwashing, lysol spraying fool lately.

Since I am not currently exhibiting symptoms but the incubation period is 2 to 4 days and I will be leaving for WDW in two I want to be prepared just in case. I don't have a doctor that would just prescribe an RX for me over the phone so I know I would probably have to go to the nearest clinic in Orlando.

Any tips or can you tell me where that would be and how to get there? Thanks!

Don't know but I have seen it on here before - so I'm sure someone will respond. The "good" thing about strep (as it sounds like you know) once you get the medicine in you - you feel much better pretty quickly.

Hope you stay healthy and have a great trip.

Thanks - we just found out that my son's tonsils are abscessed and they need to be drained. This is the worst case he has ever had. I'm starting to feel a little dizzy and blech already so maybe it will hit me by tomorrow so I can go to a clinic for a prescription before I even go to Florida.

My son had his tonsils out on the 5th. He is in 1st grade. Went back to school last week - He missed a week and a half of school. My older one missed three weeks of school when he had them out in 1st grade. (three years ago)

Best of luck. If you have to go that route - the recovery period gets worse before it gets better. Oh, and a tip from our first time around - tylenol with codine can constipate kids (I'm sure adults too) so switch to regular tylenol and ibuprofin as soon as he tolerates it. My younger one hated the taste of the tylenol with codine that he switched the day after surgery. He must have a high tolerance for pain - but it was his body and not mine!

Best of luck. Enjoy Disney. Your little guy will be just fine and I bet you stay healthy. I'm suffering from food poisoning by association - my youngest (yes, the one he had his tonsils out earlier this month) is home with food poisoning and just being around him has my stomach turning! (Doctor confirmed it was not the flu but food poisoning) So, perhaps once you get in sunny Florida you will be feeling better.

My entire family got strep the last day of our vacation there, it was miserable...We didn't go to a Dr. there, but waited until we got back home. I don't know what to tell you, but I certainly hope you don't get it! They do have some immune "booster" over the counter medicine that could be taken- or our pediatric Dr. for our girls will give us a perscription for strep if one of them has it...Call your child's Dr. and tell him/her your situation- he may just write out a scrip for you!

I would ask your child's dr. to give you a script..and tell him that you usually get it when he does. I'm sure the dr. will write one. Good luck and have a magical trip:)

My son got sick last year while we were at Disney. If you feel like you are coming down with Strep go to the front desk. They should have information there. There is a clinic in Celebration about 10 minutes from Disney. The clinic will send a car to come get you if you don't have a car. The clinic took my insurance card I just had to pay the copay. There is a pharmacy across the street from the clinic and a car will take you back to your hotel. The transportation is free I just gave the driver a tip!. Good luck. I hope that it is just nerves settling in and nothing serious

Thanks everyone. Luckily I didn't get strep but we did get some horrible virus that my boyfriend's family passed around at Thanksgiving. He must have gotten it then and then two days after we were at Disney it hit him. Then two days after that I got it. We were miserable but it only lasted about 36 hours. Unfortunately it hit me during our meal at Brown Derby and our dinner the next night was at Flying Fish and I was still feeling yucky so I couldn't enjoy either of those meals. Otherwise we had a great time!

If you have a car, there is a CVS a few miles from Disney and they have a minute clinic. No appointment needed and the wait is about 15 minutes. You actually see a nurse practitioner not a doctor, but they can diagnose common illnesses and send the script right to the pharmacy while you wait. They accept most insurance…otherwise I think it’s a $35 fee. I did this when I was there last April and it was very simple. Check out cvs.com for more info on the minute clinic.

I hope you don't get sick!!

My boys both got strep throat when we left for disney. The 4yr old complained of a sore throat and the 7yr old had a runny nose. i called their doctor and asked to have them tested for strep the day before we left for disney. The test in the office came back neg. but they cultured it over night and 5 hrs into our drive we got the call that both boys had strep throat. We stopped at a walmart and the doctor called in the prescription. My 4yr old felt terrible the whole drive to disney (17hrs). My 7yr old never had any symptoms. The next day both were feeling great and had tons of fun at the park.
I didn't have vacation insurance so I called my health insurance before I left and found out all of their rules. I wanted to make sure I was covered if we needed a doctor or er. They said if we used a minute clinic (or something like that ) we had to call for the insurance company to approve the visit or it would be paid for by the insurance company. Make sure you know how your insurance company handles claims when you are on vacation.

We were having a fantastic time at WDW till our final day (early this week, in fact). DD caught a bad stomach virus. So we had to take her to the Centra Care Urgent Care facility (run by Florida Hospital) which is near Downtown Disney. One of the CMs at the All Star Music Resort said that they provided free transportation. However this free service is only till 6p.m. We had to take a cab there. While there, the doctor who attended to my DD said that she had to have fluids via IV which they could not administer at their facility. So guess what? We were taken to Florida Hospital-Celebration in an ambulance. She was very dehydrated at this point and could not hold down anything in her stomach. Poor girl. I felt terrible. But, the people at Florida Hospital were very professional. My DD is recovering nicely now. Though still not fully recovered. It was quite an ordeal. Hopefully it will never happen again! I would never wish this upon anyone. It's horrible seeing your child sick in a hospital bed. Still though, we had a good time at Disney and will not hesitate to return for another round of fun.

Sorry your DD got so sick. We were there over Thanksgiving and all got the nasty stomach bug. Seems there was something really bad going around down there right now. Glad your DD is feeling better!

Thanks for your concern. :)
I've also read somewhere here on disboards of other instances of Disney visitors getting sick during the same time period. We were there Nov 27-Dec 8. Very odd. I hope it's just a coincidence and nothing else. And I do hope all who did fall ill recovered nicely!

i am not sure about any doctor there...
but as per other people suggestions above..some one will respond..so have a good health and enjoy..

We were also down there w/son, DIL and 10 month old granddaughter. The baby got a stomach bug a few days before we were to leave and wouldn't eat/drink. We bought Pedilyte, gave her the dole fruit bars, water through a syringe and thought she was on the road to recovery. On Friday morning when we were to leave my son came knocking on my door and she wouldn't even pick her head up off of his shoulder. Told him she couldn't fly and we, too, ended up at Celebration Hospital (wonderful staff). They said on a scale of 1-10 she was a 7 for being dehydrated. It took them six sticks and four nurses before they were finally able to get a vein in her foot for the IV to rehydrate her. Were were there for ten hours and to boot I woke up that morning vomiting/diarrhea as did my son. Glad she didn't have to be admitted - they don't do pediatrics there - we would have had to go to the Children's Hospital in downtown Orlando. We actually, at one point, were lying on the floor in her ER room. Thankfully her mom and my husband weren't sick. It was a nightmare because we had checked out of our room, didn't have transportation and flights had to be changed. Wasn't able to get a flight out until Sunday, used points and stayed at OKW because BWV was booked and rented a van at the Dolphin. In the end it all worked out and most importantly our baby was fine.
