My wife is really nervous about getting seasick. Any tips on what she should take? How about the kids?

I actually suffered with sea sickness on our first cruise. I was lucky it only lasted for a day, but even THAT'S too long! I had gotten the wrist bands (they didn't work for me nor did the Dramamine!)

This year I planned it better and got the "patch" from my doc. It's perscription only and it worked out great! I wasn't sick at all! The only downfall is that I suffered with some blurry vision and dry eyes. Next year, I'm going to get it again! That would be my recommendation!

Bonine works the best for my DH. Me and DS didn't need it.

it depends what time of the year you're sailing as to how likely you are to get seasick...(that is, how smooth the sailing will be)

i'm extremely prone to motion sickness and sea sickness.....we sailed in July both times, and i didn't get seasick (even though i didn't take anything, since i have a drug interaction problem that precludes me from taking anything against seassickness)...

If she isn't a person that typically gets car sick or sick on theme park rides then she really has nothing to worry about. I am a car sick type person..and I fell better on the ship than on land. The ship has stabilizers and is very smooth as far as sailing goes.

I take a non drowsy dramamine in the morning before we leave for the port and I am usually good to go for the whole cruise. I had to use my seabands the 1st night of our very first cruise and never after that. We have done 3 to 14 nights. Good thing about this is, a sailaway drink is still possible!

I had a prescription for the patch before our first 7 night..when I got home and read all the side effects connected with it..I never even opened the package.

We've only sailed in June and the seas were pretty calm. We are thinking about trying this October when my youngest is on Fall break. How are the seas during that time? How about the weather?

Just remember there are two stages of sea sickness:
Stage 1: You think your going to die
Stage 2: You wish you were dead.....

Maybe your wife just needs to start drinking early on the first day----preferably before the lifeboat drill----then you can just ignore her when she gets sick and holds everyone up from roll call...... :rotfl2:

It might have been posted on the thread provided, but I read that you should start taking the Bonine, Dramamine, whatever it is one week PRIOR to sailing. On our cruise I had the perscription patch on, took a little Bonine, and ended up ordering a glass of Ginger Ale at the sail away party b/c my stomach still wasn't right. Well, I don't know which really helped, but I was feeling much better by the second day. Every body is different so use what works best for you. Good luck and happy sailing!

Our pediatrician suggested we give the kids Benadryl to help their sea sickness. Kids are very adaptable to their environment. My kids never noticed the motion of the ocean not even my kid who has the biggest motion sickness problem. :teeth:

Good luck

I get car sick easily so I was very afraid of sea sickness :sad2: I ended up getting the patch that goes behind your ear, on the second day my vision was blurry, when I looked in the mirror one of my pupils was very large (scary looking), so I took the patch off. And ya know what.....I was fine, there were a couple of times that I felt a little sick. mostly when we were in our room (inside stateroom) so I went outside on deck to get some fresh air and that cured it. All the more reason to get a verandah next cruise ;) .

I took a Bonine on Sat. night, but DH and DD didn't.
I took my next dose on Sunday about 5:00, but they didn't. DD put on her Seabands though. At 6:00 dinner, we had a vibration under our table. They begged for the Bonine then, but they felt lousy the rest of the evening and didn't attend Hercules. They were fine the rest of the trip.
From then on, at 4:30 or so while we were showering for dinner, I doled out the Bonine all the way around.
We drove home Thursday and every time we took a potty break, the restroom would move. I felt fine as long as we were moving. We all got home and had sea legs, so we took one more nightly Bonine Thursday night.
We've been fine ever since.
p.s. - as long as we were busy, we never felt drowsy in the daytime and slept like logs at night. We were drowsy on the way home Thursday though....just sitting.

I am prone to motion sickness. Not so much in cars unless I am reading or looking down but especially on theme park rides and on water. For our first three cruises, I used the patch which worked great but the biggest side-effect I had was dry mouth the day I put it on. I had to change it three times as it was only good for three days so I had this happen three days. No amount of beverages seemed to help! I also had slight drowsiness. I didn't notice it unless I laid down and then I was out!

Considering the alternative of getting seasick, the patch was a great alternative.

On our last Disney cruise (May Panama Canal), I used less-drowsy Dramamine. I took one in the morning and one before dinner and I was fine and had no side-effects at all.

I had been using Dramamine for going to the parks and it really helped. Without it, I can't ride Mission:Space, Mad Tea Party, or Soarin'.
