Getting reservations

We are thinking of buying some points in DVC, but have a question about reservations. I've been reading about wait lists and such and it makes me nervous. Do you need to reserve your room 11 months in advance in order to get it? Not often am I going to know if we are going to go that far in advance. Most likely while the kids are little we will be travelling in off-season. Is this more of an issue during peak times, or all year round? Thanks for any help!

I am not to sure, since I am new to DVC but I think a lot of it has to do with when you want to go.
I just made reservations for September, 7 consecutive nights at the BCV and it is only less than 3 months away. And it was no problem. But I guess it's pretty lonely in September.

Is this more of an issue during peak times, or all year round?

Peak DVC times tend to be the following: Spring Break/Easter; mid-October through mid-November during EPCOT's Food & Wine Festival; and Thanksgiving through the first two weeks of December.

Also, if you own at BWV and want to book Standard View rooms for less points, you'll need the 11-month window as those rooms tend to book quickly.
