Is there any way that through groups of family, friends, neighbors, church and or community this could become a do it yourself work party project?

I think that labor is usually the big expense in a roof replacement estimate. Under the circumstances you've mentioned I think this would be the best way to get help. Somewhere in these groups should be someone with experience.
Whenever I read your posts I think what a great Daughter, Mother, person you are. I believe that people who know you will want to help.

We helped out our best friends when they reroofed. It saved them almost 5 grand!!!! It was hot, hard work for 2 days. Us girls got a good work out dumping the trash in the dumpster. I don't do heights very well, so I was never "on" the roof, but I sure was up and down the ladder with supplies and drinks for the guys. We also had to run and get boards when they found out they needed to replace more than they thought.

Would help out friends again if asked.

Rent is lower than maintaining a house and he would have whatever he made on the house. I don't understand your statement. If he can't afford the house where do you want him to live? That is where people who can't afford to own a house (or don't want one) live. Many of my parents friends did that as they got older to avoid the maintenance. If he is low income he can probably get into senior housing.

An apartment most likely wouldn't be large enough for daughter and family also and if moves into senior housing then family can't live with him . Sounds like Dad needs medical assistance and as well as help with bills. Better DD and family care for Dad then strangers.

But she said she can't afford it either. Millions of people live in apartments including families. Or they can rent a house.
Or live in the house with no insurance.

If you are roofing it yourself make sure someone really knows what they are doing because the insurance co. will probably want it inspected or signed off by someone licensed.

There is no way the bank holding the reverse mortgage will let them go without insurance. If it got canceled they would go out and get a policy, which would be way more expensive, and take the premiums out of his reverse mortgage payments or tack it on the value of the loan with interest. Neither will be good for the OP's father.

Only people who own their home can choose to go without insurance. Not something I would do or advocate but many in hurricane areas do choose to do this (other areas too but just an example).

What will the OP's father do if somebody falls from the roof? He is liable. Roofing is a very dangerous profession for the professionals. If the home is a ranch, not too bad of a job but I would never do a two story with amateurs.

Your right I forgot about the reverse mortgage.

I also don't advise going without insurance, I was just saying what else is he to do since so many on here don't seem to like the reality that he can't live there.

I also would not have friends roof my house. It isn't as easy as it seems and if they don't do it right repairs can be as much as doing it right the first time. Now if a friend is a roofer maybe.

I also know several roofers that are doing payment plans now-anything to generate business.

I was just going to suggest this as well. Most of them will do it and see it as assured income.

Have you had any luck finding a roofer who is willing to take payments or do the job for less? Sure hope so..

I remember that "rock and a hard place" very, very well - when my late DH had cancer and was so sick with other ailments as well.. It's not a fun place to be.. I hope you can find a solution to this problem..

Have you looked to see if there are any trade schools or high school votech programs that would do the project?
