Me = Claire (33), massive Disney fan, chief planner…(a little on the OCD side ;) ) obsessive shopper, addicted to scrapbooking and very impulsive which doesn’t bode well for our credit cards!

Hubby = Lee (34), not a massive Disney fan but still enjoys it, adrenaline junkie, easy going and the sensible half of our partnership!

19th December 2008

I really didn’t want this day to come….but every holiday has to end eventually. Anyway we got up, showered and packed up the last few bits. We called for a bellboy to help as we had 4 x suitcases, 2 x hand luggage & a bag with a change of clothes…poor guy thought we were crazy when I pulled up to the front of the hotel in the 2 door Mustang! :lmao: We gave him a big tip though. Lee loaded the car & we were off at 10.30am. I drove to Downtown Disney & we paid the $10 each to check in, there was only one other family in front of us in the UC/PE queue. We got checked in & got the seats I had reserved (79 A+C), got rid of the cases and were all done within 10 mins! :yay:

We decided to go over to Gaylord Palms to see the ICE! Exhibit. It cost $53 for us both, we walked into a little pre show area first where they tell you a little about the exhibit - how its made & how they colour the ice, then into the coat selection area, they have hundreds of long parka style coats in all sizes so you pick the one you need & onto the freezing temperatures…..

The entrance:

The first section is a lake scene with swans & a bridge (you can actually walk over) along with some polar bears:

Then into a room full of Christmas tree baubles:

…a Candy house (which you could walk through) & Ice Cream:

Then Santa where you could go up the steps & sit on his knee:

Then on to a huge Nativity scene, this is only a third of it:

Continued below....

Then some big slides with Santa in his sleigh & his reindeers (unfortunately Lee was turning blue & there was a queue so we gave it a miss):

Some penguins:

And finally cool dude Santa:

It was a really lovely exhibit & incredible how they made & maintain the sculptures for 7-8 weeks. Lee was frozen by the end of it & we decided to go check out the lobby of the Gaylord Palms resort as we had heard it was something special!

Wow….

I just wish we had been able to go and see it at night as hanging from the ceiling of the atrium was thousands of twinkling icicle lights, I think they would look absolutely stunning. We got a Hot Chocolate & sat down for a while whilst Lee tried to warm up then headed back to the car & got charged $10 for parking!!

We drove over to the Swan/Dolphin to play Miniature Golf at Fantasia Gardens, unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures as I left our little point & shoot camera in the car (our big camera had all been packed for the journey home) and by the time we realised it was too late to go get it as there were people waiting to play behind us. It was great fun & Lee beat me by 3 points.

It was 2pm & we hadn’t eaten anything today, we both wanted to have a big meal as I never eat on the plane as it makes me feel sick. We drove over to Downtown Disney & after much deliberation decided on T-Rex (if we could get a table). They seated us immediately in the Triceratops section…we were the only ones in there! Once again I had left my camera in the car but I have borrowed someone else’s photo (a Trip report in the US section) so I can show you where we were sat…..see the guy in the middle with a Triceratops breathing in his ear? Well that was Lee’s seat! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

It was ok for about the first 10 mins then drove us both crazy as it kept moving every 30 seconds or so. Anyway Lee ordered the half Chicken & half rack of ribs with waffle fries & I had the Bronte burger with waffle fries, both had cokes. $52 + tip. I really suggest that you don’t bother with a starter….we hadn’t eaten all day & the main course alone filled us up – it was huge! It was great value, great food & great fun. We will definitely go back. :thumbsup2 We walked around Marketplace, popped in a few shops & then went into Goofys Candy Co (we’ve never got anything from here before) & decided to get a treat for the plane. We got some of the pick & mix & then I got Marshmallows covered in milk chocolate, then dipped in holiday sprinkles & drizzled with white chocolate. I didn’t eat it until later on the plane but it was SCRUMMY!!! I can’t wait to get more in September. :p

We left DTD at 4.30pm and headed for the airport. It only took 20 mins to get there, I thought it would be 40 mins for some reason – maybe I just drove fast again! ;) We dropped the car at Budget which I must say was very easy, I literally pulled up in the car park & the guy read the mileage & fuel then took the keys & gave me a receipt. Job done!

We queued for airport security which was absolutely packed solid, it then dawned on me that it was only 5 days (& the last weekend) before Christmas. We were still through within 15 mins though, we had a look around the shops & picked up the essentials….magazine, sweets & water. Then went to our Gate (81) & sat reading until we boarded. Our plane was called “Virginia Plain”. We took off at 8pm, dinner was served fairly quickly – Lee had Scallops & Prawns in a sauce of some kind with veg. I didn’t pay any attention to the menu. The only film I wanted to watch was Ghost Town but that film didn’t work throughout the whole journey! I decided to listen to some DIS podcasts that I had stored on my Ipod….but my battery was dead! :faint: I read my magazine from cover to cover & then tried to sleep with no luck. I was beginning to regret not buying another book at the airport! Lee managed to sleep for about 5 hours whilst I just fidgeted all the way home. It was a really bad flight, probably the worst turbulence we have ever experienced, the seat belt signs were on for probably 90% of the flight. We actually flew through a storm & saw lightning out the window – which was quite bizarre.

We landed on time & were straight off the plane & through passport control. We had to wait ages for our suitcases - I think they were the last one’s. Typical! Once we got through customs I called the car parking place & they bought my car round to meet us at the pick up point within 10 mins which was fab and we were on our way…..we were both desperate to see the dogs as we had missed them so much. We got stuck on the M25 for about 30 mins as there was a big crash and it had gone down to one lane but we made it back to my parents house by 11.30am, the dogs went crazy and slobbered us both to death. :teeth:
We had a cup of tea (bliss after so long without) and chatted for a while before driving home to a mountain of bills, junk mail & DIS Christmas Cards from the exchange & Secret Santa pressie. :yay:

That’s it then folks my Trip Report is over. I have thoroughly enjoyed writing it & will definitely do another one after our September trip. ::yes::
Thank you all for reading & for every one of the lovely compliments I have received from you all. :grouphug:

I would like to end with a few of my Highs & Low’s:

Low’s:

Both of us being so ill for pretty much the entire duration of the trip.
Not being able to go to the Podcast party & meeting Jules & Ian.
Missing our first trip to Kennedy Space Center.
Not seeing the Grinchmas show & Macys Parade at US/IOA.
Losing a days photos!

High’s:

Osborne Lights – AWESOME!
Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party – loved everything about it!
Wilderness Lodge – lovely resort & one we definitely plan on returning to.
Car hire – I am so glad I forced myself to drive & will always get one in the future.
Shopping!!! - Enough said?
Seeing all the Christmas decorations at WDW – even down to silly things like the serviettes & drinking cups.
Feeding the Giraffes at Busch Gardens.
Experiencing lots of Table Service restaurants as we have never made reservations on previous trips.
Predators Tour at Seaworld – very interesting.
Dine with Shamu – always a favourite of ours.

Now I am off to plan my September trip………:cool1:

Thanks Claire for your lovely reports and photos. I have especially enjoyed seeing the festive decorations we didn't get to see. I am looking forward to your next one in September.

Happy planning :)

I've really loved your trip report and amazed that you managed to pack so much in when you were both pretty ill at times. Your photos are brilliant and I've enjoyed looking at them, especially the ones of places that I've never been.

So glad you had a brilliant time.
