Okay, let's get this straight. We are on the free dining plan this September (3 of us). I am aware at a TS dinner you are allowed one entree, dessert, and non alcoholic beverage. If we all followed this scenario we would receive a bill with nothing to pay except for a gratuity. Correct?

So what if we decide to order an appetizer. Do they give us two separate checks. One for the dining plan and one for the extras? And I think I read they add 18% gratuity to the "extra" bill? Is this correct? I'm trying to figure out how this works when you order more than what is allowed or offered on the dining plan.

Thanks a bunch. Just a friendly reminder....I do not intend for this thread to turn into an argument. :thumbsup2

:cool1: :hippie: We went in June and decided to pay the tip cash. So if we ordered an app. or a beer, anything extra it was on the check, the entree, dessert and drink are zeroed out, they add a 18% tip if there are 6 or more at your table. The check comes with your extras on it and a line to check off if you want to pay 18% or 20% tip, now this is if you are going to charge it back to your room, if you are paying tip cash then you put a 0 for tip and tell them your paying tip cash. Then they bring you another check to sign if you are paying cash tip. You pay for the extras a leave extra for a tip. But buy paying cash you have 2 checks to sign and it takes longer.
Now we are going in September and thinking of paying the 18 or 20% tip that you check off on the room key so we only have one check to sign.
I don't know if that helps after you do it once it isn't as confusing as my explanation.

They bring you a bill with a tip line for 18 or 20%???? You have GOT to be kidding me. I have never heard of anything so tacky in my life!!! I dine out in some of NYC's best restaruants and have never seen this. I have seen several percentages listed at the bottom, NEVER with a "check-off" line and NEVER not giving the customer the ability to tip what they feel is appropriate. (Except for large parties when the tip is basically a service fee.)

TACKY! TACKY! TACKY!:sad2:

You can tip whatever you want. The 18% and 20% are suggestions. This is in lieu of the automatic gratuity that existed last year. I'm pretty sure it was a stipulation of the new union contract that Disney apply these "suggestions" to the checks. In any event, you can leave whatever you want.

I agree. They do have "suggested" tip amounts at the bottom. Actually eating out locally is pretty much the same at home. Ruby Tuesdays does the 15/18/20 at the bottom of their bills too. I don't mind that they do the math for me. (However, unlike Ruby Tuesdays', Disney doesn't list 15%).:confused3

Wow! I didn't think they would make it so difficult. We are going to pay cash for our tips.

Thought it would just be like at a restaurant at home. You get the bill, pay what you owe, place cash on the tip line, and leave the tip on the table.

Now I have to tell them when I get the bill that we are leaving a cash tip, they then have to give me another check because we are paying cash, and then we can leave? Wow! That's truly :goofy: !!

If you want to use the KTTW to pay for your gratuities, the procedure is a little different depending on whether you have an OOP item (appetizer, etc.) vs. having everything covered by your DDP (Dx or reg).

Case 1) All covered by DDP: Be sure to tell your server that you want to add a tip, and the dollar amount, *BEFORE* they take your KTTW. This is out of order than the way you do it after everywhere else. If they swipe it and the receipt comes back all zeros, there is no longer any way to add a tip. There is no "tip" line on the receipt. IF you do tell them to add a tip, you get 2 receipts back: 1 zeroed out on your DDP and another for the service charge. There will be a "tip" line on this receipt. Don't tip on your tip!

Case 2) Not all covered by DDP: Actually simpler, because you can actually tip using your KTTW like a regular credit card. You get 2 receipts back: 1 zeroed for the DDP items and a 2nd one for the non DDP items, which also includes a tip line where you can write in a tip for the entire meal.

Warning for those on the DxDDP: If you order appetizers servers may think you are Case 2 on the regular DDP and take your card without explaining the tipping procedure or providing a slip of paper for you to write your tip. The receipt will be unexpectedly all zeros for them, and you have no place to add a tip. Bring cash in case this happens.

I did read somewhere that if you order something not included in the DDP, like an appetizer, the 18% gratuity is automatically added to this purchase. Is this wrong?

So what would be the scenarios if you are paying the tip with cash? We would not be utilizing the KTTW cards for purchases.

Yes it is wrong. The 18% is added to parties more than 5 people. If your order the appetizer or a beer you have to pay for that OOP.:)

Your first mistake is assuming WDW restaurants are fine dining. You ar correct, it is tacky for fine dining but with the changes to the quality of WDW dining over the last few years, I equate the vast majority of their retaurtants with your average chain restaurant. WDW does not care about appearing tacky when it comes to making money and this was a deal made with the union when the unions was against removing the tip from the dining plan.

Is it 5 or 6 ppl per party? Also if service is sorry, then every manager better get ready to remove the add tip. I pay for service not just because. Just like my boss pays me for the work I do not just because he should. Sorry for that but I really dislilke  it when they add a tip just because of a party of 6 or more. If you can't handle a table of 6 then get into another profession. Also, been there and done that so yes I can say that. I never add had anyone add the 18%. I got paid for my service not cause someone felt sorry for me.

This last april at Epcots coral reef we had a terrible waiter and he had the gall to ask us if we were going to add the tip to our room or give him cash

Please direct any tipping questions to this thread. Tipping discussion is restricted to this thread.

Tipping threads here on the Restaurant Boards have consistantly turned into debate threads with lots of arguments. They all tend to get closed in the end once they cross the line.

The Restaurant Board mods are willing to create one thread where tipping questions can be asked and answered. HOWEVER, this is NOT the debate board.

Here are the basic guidelines

1. No fighting, name calling or debate on people's personal tipping habits. This includes but not limited to:
I will not tip my server more than I tithe the Lord
I will not give a server more than I make an hour
Everyone knows servers make 100k a year, why should I tip them
Servers should be paid a living wage and not have to depend on tips to support themselves..hence tipping should be abolished.
2. No flaming anyone for any reason.

3. Any post deemed off topic or in anyway against the posting guidelines will be deleted without comment and the poster will receive an infraction.

4. Any other thread started on the restaurant board for the "tipping" topic will be closed with a note to see this thread (This includes DDP board).
