getting a larger room

This may be a silly question, however, is it possible to book a room with points (say a studio) then upon arrival see if a larger room (one bedroom) is available and pay cash for the difference?

I don't think a combo of cash and points is possible. If you booked with points, the upgrade would have to be points.

But, you can stay some nights on cash and some nights on points...but that has to be arranged with MS in advance on separate ressies, then have the ressies linked.

No, but you can upgrade at check in using points if availalble. What you could do is change your reservation to part points and part cash. If that is what you want to do, best to plan now rather than waiting until checkin.
