get rid of my counter

How do I get rid of my counter that has expired. I went to the user page and highlighted the typing for the counter and hit delete. this did not work.

Please don't be offended by this question. Did you hit save signature after you did it? That happened to me the first time I tried to delete something in my signature. I must have missed that button.
