Get an iPhone?

I *think* I really want an iPhone, but I'm not sure that I really *need* one! I don't have any real reason I need to access the internet while I'm out, but I think all the cool apps would be really nice and convenient to have.

I "rebundled" our cable bill and lowered it about $30, so I can justify the extra $30 a month on the cell phone bill. And I can swing the $100 for the phone, but I need someone to convince me to take the plunge!

Also, has anyone bought a refurbished iPhone? They have them for $50, but is it worth the savings?

Oh, and one more thing...is there any word on them coming out with iPhones is new colors, other than black and white?

Thanks!!

I love my iPhone, I use it for everything (including posting on the DIS right now, lol). Having said that I do have my eye on the new phone that google is suppposed to put out soon, sounds like it might rival the iPhone as far as apps are concerned.

First off, don't worry about the colors. You want to get a hard case for it, and can get some fun colors that way (mine's an iridescent royal blue, really fun!).

I love having access to my email, even though I can live without it. And some of the apps are cool.

Remember, once you have one, you can never go back...

I have a G1 - and I can tell you not to worry about the new app's rivaling the iPhones (I have the same selction as the G2, has) Android still has far less app's then iPhone - however I'm hoping the G2's take off, and I can have more choices.

That being said - I love, love, love my G1. I never thought I needed a smart phone, now I don't know how I lived without it.

OP - if you do not have a smart phone, and have the ability to upgrade for only $50, I say go for it. Like I said, don't know how I lived without one. I LOVE my G1.

I have an iPhone 3G and it is absolutely awesome. There is no way that I could live without it, honestly. I can do anything with it that I can do on a computer, unless it requires an Adobe Flash plug-in. I have paid all of my bills on it, use it as a GPS, and my email is always there to use. There are also a lot of apps that are really useful. I have a checkbook register app that is great. I never carry my checkbook, so I just have to pull out my phone to see my balance and make entries when I leave the store.
If you are going to get a refurbished phone, try to get it from Apple. They still guarantee their refurbs, and most stores don't.
If you don't already have a contract with AT&T, it will probably cost more than the 30 a month that you have available. I have the lowest minute plan that I can have to still have free nights and weekends (900 minutes with rollover and free mobile to mobile), the unlimited data plan, unlimited texting, and AT&T Telenav (GPS $10/mo) that puts my bill at about $120 a month.
If you do decide to get it and the plans, do not get the all inclusive bundle with unlimited data/text on it. It is the same price as getting them seperately, but the data plan is not unlimited, it is limited to 5GB a month. You may never use that much, but it could possibly happen.

Sorry so long, but just some things that I wish I knew before I got mine. It wouldn't have stopped me from getting it, but it would have been nice to know.

I bought a refurbished phone through AT&T when my old cell was up for an upgrade. I'm pretty sure it came with some type of apple warranty, but I really don't remember.

That was probably about 6 months or so ago and I haven't had any problems with it at all. It was worth the savings for me (about 1/2 off, I think). I was hesitant about the iPhone before I bought it. My DH had one for a while and I started to get jealous. LOL! The 1/2 off price with the refurb justified it for me.
