Germany veal schnizel gone??

My family LOVES eating at Germany- the show, the atmosphere, meeting new Disney friends at your table, the beer (for some of us ) and my husband loves this all but he especially loves their food. His favorite over the past few years is the veal schnizel (not sure I am spelling that right). Anyways we went to Germany early in October the veal was changed to chicken that he said was blah and dry- What do other think about Germany recently - has its quality gone down and will the veal return????

We went in August, and the schnitzel was a Schweineschnitzel, that is, pork cutlet.

For what it's worth, this is also quite authentic--I've had Schweineschnitzel many times in Germany, but it is definitely not as good as the veal. The pork version tends to be drier and tougher. Personally, I greatly prefer the veal schnitzel (authentic Wiener Schnitzel).

I have never heard of a chicken schnitzel. I doubt that it was chicken when you went in October.

Checking the Allears.net menu, it lists the schnitzel as being "Schnitzel Wiener Art": this roughly translates as "like/similar to Wiener Schnitzel," which generally implies that it is made out of pork instead of veal.

Edited to add: I just noticed that there is an English translation of the menu, and it confirms what I've said here. The menu lists the schnitzel as: "Schnitzel Wiener Art (Breaded Pork Schnitzel Vienna Style)."

Yeah. Unfortunately Schnitzel is any meat they want cooked in that manner.

Since most won't know the difference and pork is cheaper I would not expect to see it back any time soon.

If they go to chicken that that would be very disappointing, so don't bring this up again and give them any ideas .

But I make chicken schnitzel all the time at home and it's quite tasty!

I was there for dinner 2 weeks ago and it was definitely chicken. It was also incredibly tough - too bad because the flavor was good.

I'm really surprised that they would be using chicken.

I'm pretty sure that it was pork when we went to the restaurant in August 2009, but I could have been wrong--it was very dried out and I only had one bite.

The disappointing schnitzel is one of the reasons why we're not going back there on our next visit in February.

I have never heard of chicken schnitzel . That is Disney being cheap. I have been to several Oktoberfest celebrations in Kitchener/Waterloo Ontario and the schnitzel was pork. I think traditionally it is veil or pork. Disney should be ashamed to serve chicken schnitzel. It then just becomes a pounded flat breaded chicken breast.

German/ Autrian Purist will tell you Wiener Schnitzel which means cutlet without bones, is traditionally veal. Although it can be pork.

A look at wikipedia and I found a quote -
"In Austria, the term Wiener Schnitzel is protected by law, and any schnitzel called by that name has to be made from veal."

They should have atleast changed it to pork not chicken. It sounds as though there are a lot of people who don't eat veal for many personal reasons, wether its the way the animals are raised and slaughtered, or wether some just can't stand the idea of eating "baby cow".

I guess the only thing to do would be to suggest to them and write a comment but if it wasn't a popular menu item I doubt that would help. Hopefully they don't call it Weiner Schnitzel and instead either say on the menu Chicken Scnitzel. Chicken in the style of Schnitzel, or how about coated breadcrumb fried chicken. lol.

It just doesn't seem all that authentic to me, I know it's not the same but have you thought of trying to find a good recipe and cooking it for him on a special occasion? You can get veal at a meat market, or you could try a whole foods.

I think Disney is also trying to cater to a mass audience. Many people don't like or won't eat veil. The same goes for pork, either due to customs or religious reasons. Chicken is more globally acceptable as a meat to eat, so by offering it they appeal the masses.

I agree and this is disappointing, but I'm getting used to this in Disney .

From several sources on the web and my experiences in Germany and Austria:
Unfortunately, Schnitzel means a cutlet without bones and can be any meat they feel like serving.

Traditionally it is veal and it is now sometimes made of pork, though in that case it is often called Schnitzel Wiener Art.

In Austria, the term Wiener Schnitzel is protected by law, and any schnitzel called by that name has to be made from veal.

Personally my favorite is a veal schnitzel topped with a fried egg, onions, and capers served on red cabbage with brown mushroom gravy. (Called the Metropolis in Berlin after the movie of the same name.)

Any I really do agree but that is so blah. I mean the world showcase really should showcase more authentic food, not dumb it down to cater to the masses. I understand they have to go based on who much money they make off of the dish and how much it cost to make it, but chicken? That seems sacreligious.

I agree, but I know people in the medical field (in Europe not the US) who do not eat chicken for some reason. Nothing to do with politics or religion, but they have not eaten chicken in several years. They still eat pork, veal and beef. This was a lot more then a handful of people BTW.
Maybe the chicken supply is not as safe as ours.

There are many items on the menu for those that do not eat veal or pork.
For example rotisserie chicken and salmon are on the menu.
If I dine at a German restaurant I do expect a lot of pork on the menu.

Also would it be that difficult to offer pork and chicken?

I prefer veal but understand that politically it is not popular for the same reasons we no longer have Foie gras in Disney.

That being said it seems there are other veal items on the menu so that makes me think that it is more about cost then politics.
Veal loaf is on the menu.
Weisswurst mit Senf und Pretzel Brautchen has to be veal, but they should not be served after noon anyway so Disney can do whatever they like here.

Unless they get a lot of negative feedback I would say that it will be chicken from now on.

Thank you DDP. The food has been in a tail spin since the second year of the DDP.
I say this all the time.
I recall the first year of the DDP people ordering the most expense things on menus, not knowing what they are and then sending them back since they did not like them.

I wish I could remember exactly what the items were, but it was some item in France.
They finally took it off the menu.

I recall hearing similar stories in other locations.

Yes, they have served Chicken Schnitzel and Pork Schniztel for many years. Interestingly, we have eaten at Biergarten several times since 2004 and they have NEVER served veal-based schnitzel any of the times that we have eaten there. In fact, when my parents and I spent two weeks in Austria a few years ago I am not sure that we EVER saw veal-based schnitzel on any of the menus. Generally, they served pork, chicken, or turkey based schnitzel. The main variety was the type of sauce in which the schnitzel was served. As a PP noted, schnitzel is a style of cutting and cooking.
