General Rent/Trade question...

I know that there is a rent/trade section, but this is a general question regarding the process and this seemed like the best place for it, I hope I am right!

Disney says that you are not allowed to trade points amongst dvc members and have any cash change hands. How can they monitor this? There are SO MANY threads for "points for transfer" and they all have a $$$ amount next to them?!?

With the rule change back in November regarding the # of associate members you can have, it seems like they are making an effort to crack down on this. Is anyone worried? We are about to buy in to DVC, but one of the attractive parts was that if we were going to want to "rent/transfer" a few points for a trip we could do so at a low cost.

Any thoughts?

If Disney feels that people are taking money from the Mouse, they will crack down and change the rules to their benefit. I wouldn't count on the renting and transfer rules staying like they are.

I completely agree with that, but I just dont see how they can monitor/enforce any rules regarding that, unless they don't allow DVC members to transfer points...

Since members are only allowed one transfer in or out a year, getting a "few points" can be difficult, especially if they want to get rid of a lot of points.

Now that I have given it some more thought, you are obviously right. It isn't going to play a role in our decision as I am one of those "uber planners" as it seems most are. Waiting on the point charts seems like its going to be the biggest challange now that they seem to be moving points around...

Oh, so that's how it works. Thanks for the clarification. We will be looking for someone to transfer points in April instead of linking a ressie-which can be confusing when we're the one with the membership and guests who aren't will be staying with us in a 2bdr.

One of the ways to manage needing only a few extra points is to get a bigger transfer in Year 1, and then use banking to essentially stretch out those points to last.

By next year, I will probably be in need for an additional 10 - 15 points a year. What I am going to do (if I don't add on 25 by then), I will simply look for a transfer of 50 - 75 points. It will run me about $1000 or so.

Once I have that, those points, through banking of my own points, can carry me for 5 or 6 years. This way, I have what I need, and put myself in a position to avoid the 1 transfer per UY situation.

Also, this way allows me to take care of short term and then re-evaluate whether the need will continue. If it does, then a permanent add on will be in order!

But, my kids are getting older and there is a chance that a studio for 1/2 the trip will be plenty since we will be down to traveling with only 3.

See, thats the reason I post questions in here. I am sure that I would have thought of that, eventually. That makes complete sense. Thats what we are planning on doing with the '09 points that we get when we buy into DVC this year. We will get those points to last over the course of the next 3,4,5 years.

If you look for those 50 or 75 points, how much importance will you put on making sure they are for your home resort and same UY?

It's important because transferred points keep their Home Resort and Use Year designation so if they are from a different Home Resort than what you own you cannot combine them with your points for a reservation at your HR until 7mos window opens. And jmho, having the same Use Year just makes it easier to keep track of both your points and the transferred points.

Once I am ready, I will look for points only from my home resort so I can use them at the 11 month window.

And, UY does not have to be the same as my own. It just needs to be one that will allow the points to be eligible for that first trip. There will be some UY's that won't work as easily as others so my goal would be to get a UY that is the easiest to work with.
