Any ideas what is best. Since Im flying with Virgin I thought I might go the night before and check in and stay in a hotel with parking or should I just drive up in the morning and pay to park?
I live in Southampotn by the way

hi julie

we always book a taxi mainly because we feel so jet lagged on the way home.

Also the taxi drops you right outside the airport. Price wise I dont think theres much in it.

Hi

It all depends when the plane leaves and how long the journey back home is. We stayed at the Hilton we were to leave at 7am to Mexico and we personally wouldnt do it again. Not because the hotel was horrible. The hotel was great you could up at the latest time and then walk to the airport.

We usually park at Gatwick, but being long haul you are so tired it can be awkward. You have to fight the tiredness.

We hired a limo once before and found the prices to be the same as a taxi. This was great as we could drink soft or alcholic drinks on the way. You dont have to worry about parking or the drive back.

Next time we go we are hiring a limo or parking ourselves. The hotels are expensive. Some of the hotels off site only have certain times of the day they transfer you to the airport. We stayed at the Cambridge Hotel that was absoloutly awful. It was skanky. We didnt even want to sleep in covers as it had cigeratte holes in them.... yuk... When we left the morning of our flight we had to book a taxi to take us to the airport and vice versa on the way back. If you stay at a hotel get some recommendations and time tables of transfers. You dont want to pay for parking and then have to pay taxi prices aswell.

Good luck and have a nice time.

Hi Julie

We always stay at the Hilton overnight - if you book through Virgin you park in the car park adjacent to the hotel. It adds an extra day to our holiday and we always look forward to it and you don't get any worries about car breakdowns or the motorway being closed due to an accident etc. like you do if you are travelling to the airport on the day.

Best wishes

We're flying down from Glasgow the night before our BA flight to Tampa and are planning on staying in a hotel that night. Anyone know which webite will give us good prices? We need a family room for the four of us. Are we better booking direct with the hotel?

Hi Scottish Mouse,

Give www.holidayextras.co.uk a try. I found them very competitive (cheaper than Virgin and MUCH cheaper than the hotel direct).

Cheers

Karen

Scottish Mouse - if the 4 of you includes 2 children under 16, the Travel Inn is very close to the terminals (less than 1 mile) and costs less than £50 per night for a family room (but you do have to pay for shuttle bus transfer or a taxi). http://www.travelinn.co.uk/TI/index.jsp

It also has an offer for a room with parking, full breakfast and transfers for around £110.

Don't know how you feel about B&B accommodation but there are quite a few near Gatwick which offer parking and airport transfers. We have booked one for the night before we fly and for a triple room and two weeks parking they only charge £80. We will need to get a taxi to/from the airport but they are only 5 minutes away from the airport. There is a web site for the Gatwick Guest Houses Association which provides details of what they offer and an indication of prices. Here is a link http://www.gatwick-guesthouses.co.uk/

Most places I tried just for parking wanted over £100 so it was the best option for us.

I would definielty say get a taxi or minibus. Its easy enough to think about parking or hotel on the way there but the way back is a killer - every time we have booked a taxi and every time we have fallen asleep as soon as we got in the car. I wouldn't put my husband through a 2-3 hour drive home.

If its any help, I can give you a rough idea of prices as I dont live too far away from you.

Thanks

We are also using a taxi, no way we'll want to drive when we get back! Also about the same price as the parking and hotel overnight, but without the hassle of having to drive, plus as someone has already said, they drop you off at the terminal so no bus drives, etc...

We ALWAYS have a chauffeur driven hire car. From Swindon it costs us about £180 but is so worth it. We leave early and spend a few relaxing hours in the Clubhouse. On our return, the driver meets us at the arrivals area , takes the luggage and when we sit in the car we inevitably fall asleep. This nap also gets us through the day which reduces jet lag. We just think of the money as part of our holiday.
