A friend of mine has just been through Gatwick Airport with a disabled friend in a wheelchair.
Due to work going on (she assumes with the shuttles) all disabled passengers are taken down in a lift to ground level, transfered to a special bus and then up in a lift to the sattelite. As they take more than one disabled familiy at a time, the travel time is around 45 mins.
I would image that they are doing the same with able bodied passengers but on a bigger bus.
She also said that the shuttle buses from the hotel were not allowed to the South terminal so they had to get a taxi (same price it seems)

Yes there is major work going on.

We had to queue down a metal stairway and around several corners to get on a bus to take us to the far terminal - it added quite a bit of time to getting to the gate. The route we took was definately not suitable for wheelchair users.
