i love alligators and would like to go to gatorland - if i get the chance to go back to florida.

but for some reason it doesn't sit well with me - the wrestling shows that they do with them.

is this okay? or just exploiting the gators?

am i being over sensitive?

honest opinions please.

gatorland doesn't appeal to me either. i agree with you about the wrestling shows. In the Gaylord palms they have some baby gators and at feeding time they make them reach up for the meat, this we were told was because they were being trained to jump up and grab the meat, for when they go to gatorland.

We really enjoy Gatorland and the gator wrestling may not be what you have in mind when you think of 'wrestling'. Actually, the Gatorland handlers are extremely consciencious about the gator's comfort, natural tendencies, etc, and they don't (in my opinon) exploit their animals. It's a very naturalistic park, definitely low-tech, and a wonderful afternoon out, especially if you love gators. Talk to some of the handlers and I think you'll be impressed by their passion for presenting this amazing reptile in the most natural atmosphere possible.

If you have been to SeaWorld and are offended by the way they take natural behaviors and show them in a 'big presentation' format, you may find Gatorland offensive. If you enjoy seeing natural behaviors presented with great respect for the animal (or gator!) involved, I don't think Gatorland will offend you. :)

Just editing to add, the 'jumping for food' behavior is a natural one. I personally don't see it as being any different than giving a Polar Bear a block of ice with a herring frozen in the middle, or giving an Elephant a ball to roll around. It keeps their instincts intact, gives them something stimulating to do and prevents some of the problems we have seen in zoos over the years, when animals are not given the opportunity to express their instincts in an active way.

thanks for your comments and opinions.

yes - when i saw the shamu show at seaworld in seaworld - i was shocked to see how tiny the tank was.
and don't get me started on the holding pens they are kept in before they do the show.

anyway - i am still in two minds about gatorland but i do love gators.

You might not like Gatorland if you don't like the tanks the whales are in at SeaWorld (they're actually quite enormous compared to any other place I've ever seen, though they look smaller from the guest perspective). It sounds like the idea of animals in captivity might not be your cup of tea? The gators at Gatorland are definitely 'captive', though they do have plenty of room to roam. Gators tend to have rather small-ish territories in the wild, though they can get around a bit if they're males looking for a date! ;) .

is gatorland open to the public as they had a massive fir a few weeks ago search the orlando sentinal and you will seee the devastation which was pretty bad .
