I watched three news conferences and I recall a clarification that the child was not found near the GF shore. It may have been in answering questions from the press.
That's not how I interpreted it. I took it as 10-15 yards from the GF shore was he was attacked in 6 feet deep water.

Really?? I've stated my opinion before, but I'll state it again...

If you see a no swimming sign at a local lake, would you assume it's fine to bring a two year old into the water up to his waist?? Can't fathom that.

MG
It is unclear that he was in up to his waist. Most reports are that he was a foot in, as a foot away from the waterline.

CNN's article reads "the boy waded into about a foot of water," which reads like it was a foot deep? But that might be how the author of that article interpreted what was said at the press conference. Compared to the average height of a 2 year old, that shouldn't be waist deep. That would probably be pretty high up on his legs, though.

Shoutout to all the perfect parents on this thread - there seems to be a lot of you! You all should get together and write a book that us lowly outliers can read - it can include all your perfect parenting tips. I'll be sure to read it before I travel to Disney this winter. Make sure you also send a copy of your perfect parenting tips to the family you're so quick to criticize and label as 'neglectful'. Your snide remarks ideas and tips are really helpful.

I'd compare this tragic event to when Steve Irwin was killed by a sting ray - it was an awful freak occurrence but I don't think it was anyone's fault.

I think that when people are around water - there is an implied risk of dangers like drowning, bacteria, or that whatever creatures inhabit said water could be dangerous. I think it's silly to expect that everywhere you go in life you expect a sign to list any potential dangers.

Well, you're possibly the only one that heard it that way.
It's been fairly well established he was further out.

You are literally the only person who I've seen who is alleging the child was submerged up to his chest when he was attacked. Each time I've watched the sheriff speak, he described it as "wading along the shoreline." I do recall that when he was snatched, the father ran out into the water to try to get him back, and by then he was submerged to his chest. But that's where he was only after he was pulled out that far. He didn't go out that far on his own.

I'm just too tired to go search the closed threads.

There are multiple reports that the child was ankle deep.

This was my first Google search

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/06/14/reports-alligator-drags-child-into-water-fla/85905266/

Excerpt:

The 7- to 8-foot reptile grabbed the boy late Tuesday as he was playing in about a foot of water at the Seven Seas Lagoon at the resort. His father, who quickly rushed to the boy's aid, could not fend off the alligator and received minor injuries to his hand.

It's like a ridiculous game of telephone. People magazine says he was playing "in about a foot of water" and says that's according to the Associated Press, but the linked AP source article says "The child had waded no more than 1 or 2 feet into the water around nightfall Tuesday when he was taken from a small beach, authorities said." In other words, there's many conflicting reports and nothing is established.

Exactly... And that's what I said earlier that there was conflicting reports.

I find all the posters who are saying he was chest deep or whatever are trying to place blame on the parents which I find disgusting. All the reports say he was wading which means walking in the water. It was 830 pm there is now way a parent is going to let 2 year old swim chest deep in the dark.

Either way there is conflicting reports. We don't know the truth as to have deep of water he was in.
