We are planning on checking one bag and carrying on the rest of our suitcases. If we happen to be some of the last people to board the plane and the overhead space is all taken we will have to check our bags at the gate. Does anyone know if we put the yellow tags on at this point would ME take our bags? I would hate to go to baggage claim to have to pick those up when our other suitcase is getting transported by disney

The bags should end up being picked up by ME as long as they are not tagged as deliver to jetway as you gate check them. Usually, the agent will ask where you want to collect your bag.

We did exactly that in Feb! I had the ME stickers in my carry on, just in case we would change our minds and decide to check them. When we heard the call for gate checking, we put them on our bags and they arrived at our room a few hours later. No problem at all!

To add, I would put the yellow tags on before the offer to gate check. I've seen people being asked to gate check their carry ons after the board the plane. If you wait until then to put the tags on, you will be holding the entire plane up.

I love Airtran in this case because they will routinely announce at the gate that they will gate check for free........ United has done it as well...

When we have gate checked our bags, I already had the yellow ME tags on, but they were given back to us as we got off the plane (like the strollers and such are). So I would be prepared either way....

Thank you so much!

So as long as our bags are not waiting for us when we get off the plane on the jetway, ME will take them. We are flying United and whenever I have gate checked with them I had to pick my luggage up at baggage claim.

Just wanted to make sure there was no separate area they put the gate checked bags, they go straight in with the regular checked bags and disney will definitely see them?

You need to confirm as you gate check them that you want them sent to the carousel. If they gave the DME tags, Disney will collect them,

FYI for those flying SWA. The only gate check items that can be brought up to the jetway are strollers, car seats, and personal wheelchairs. All other gate checked items will be sent to baggage claim.

SOME airlines, and planes bring it up and some send it to the carousel. I've had it go both ways. I've also had a wheelchair go to baggage claim rather than the jetway (even though it was tagged for the jetway). That was why I said "confirm".

How large are these suitcases you plan to carry on? They do have size restrictions. Just wondering.

A little off topic concerning DME, but if you end up gate checking that carryon, be sure to remove any valuables such as medications, eye glasses, jewelry, electronics, cell phones, chargers, computers, e-readers, park tickets, etc. These are not covered by airline liability so if your bag is pilfered by baggage handlers, or lost, you will not be reimbursed for those items.
