Hi, I'm new to the boards, but I have been lurking for quite a while as I plan a trip with my family for later this year. :earsboy: My question is this: I am having a Gastric Bypass in a month, and am wondering what kind of dining options are available for someone who has had a bypass. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi Glynis,
I am in the same boat. I had the bypass a year and a half ago, and I do find that I can eat more now, still not that much but probably what I should have always ate. I have not been back since, hopefully next summer. I usually share a meal with my daughter, as she is not a big eater. You can get a card from your doctor, and it just says that you've had the surgery and you can not eat much. Most places will usually charge you kids price for buffets. Good luck with the surgery, it changed my life, the best thing I've ever done for myself. First few months are hard, but worth it. Best of luck. Any questions, feel free to pm me. :cheer2:

I had gastric bypass approximately two and a half years ago...lost about 200 lbs! :flower:

My DW and I have been to the World many times since my surgery and have had no problem finding acceptable dining options. Disney dining is very accomodating to special requests but the mere multitude of choices makes it much, much easier.

As the previous poster said, the first few months are a little tough but it is absolutely worth it! Best of luck to you...much success!

DH and I went last May when he was 8 months out from gastric bypass surgery. Some things we shared, some he bought his own . He ate a lot of the caesar salads and vegetarian items. At the time he was not tolerating some meats very well.
I think it is just going to depend on what you are able to eat at the time.I wouldn't worry about what you are going to eat. You could always take some protein drink mix or things like that.
I would make sure that you clear doing some of the rides with your surgeon. Good luck to you!

Oh, BTW, DH will be 2 years out in Sept. He has lost 240 pounds and just had his tummy tuck.

Hi there, :wave2:

first of all, congradulations on your life changing decision. I had it done 7 months ago, I will tell you in all honesty, I was so mad at myself in the beginning for having it done, I actually shut down, and didn't get out bed for at least 3 weeks. But you see, I was a comfort eater. And I could no longer comfort myself. BUT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I no longer feel that way, I am happy with my decision, and have lost 85bs since Nov. 1, 2004.

I have planned our familys first trip to WDW at the end of this month.  We have even gotten the dinning plan. I had these same questions and addresses these boards months ago and even called disney direct for suggestions.

I was told by many and disney that I was able to share almost any meal I wanted as long as it wasn't a buffet or dinner show. And since my husband I usually share when we go out anyway, this won't be problem for us at all. Plus that just gives us extra credits for more meals and more choices. Which is still great. Because believe it or not, I still enjoy eating very much!!

I hope you have a great recovery, and if you need any advice or have questions please feel free to PM me anytime. I would be glad to help in anyway I can.

God bless.

Glynis.. Best of luck on your surgery.. I had WLS October 4, 2004 and have lost 146 lbs to date. You will be on the journey of your life... Hold on and enjoy the ride. Although.. it is no where close to being "easy" ... it is very, very rewarding. I am planning my Disney vacation for Dec. 2005. I admit that I am having a hard time trying to figure out what to eat....especially since most of my past trips have been so food focused. But I am planning to 1) eat off the children's meal 2) share a meal with my mom.... I plan to take my protein bars and try to get eggs/meat in the morning. I am still on 2 to 3 oz of protein per meal...and by December I'm hoping that will be increased.
The other mental problem I am having is understanding that I don't have to worry about "fitting" through the turnstiles or on any rides anymore. I am still constantly looking at the "At Large" trip reports when I know it won't be necessary. I am really, really looking forward about going and just having the time of my life!!!
Congratulations on your surgery...and Have a Great Vacation!!

no1FanWDW,
I now what you mean, about the turnstiles. I can't wait to get back, just to see what it is like not to have to "wiggle" my way through. I felt the same way about chairs with arms, and now there is spare room. It is amazing all the things you are grateful for and didn't even think of. I still do not see myself as thin, even though everyone calls me "skinny". But I love it when people say they didn't even recognize me. Makes you feel good. I still have 30 more pounds to go to reach my goal, but I'm getting there. And no it was far from "easy" and I do not think people realize that, they think you took the easy way out. I do not know about the rest of you, but I still had to exercise and will always watch what I eat. And there are certain things I will never again be able to eat again, but it was well worth it. :cool1:

Hey Disneyluv4...
I have learned that sometimes it's the "little" things that make us happy...Such as getting into an "XL" T-shirt today for the first time since college..(15 years ago...) About the easy part....I do have to exercise...but it seems to be getting easier...I'm just trying to convince myself that it is fun!! lol....I have found snacking creeping back into my day and I'm just trying to keep it at a healthy snack. So far...rice is the only thing that really bothers me...which I'm not sure is a good thing or not. But anyway... When I went to Disney a year ago... I was just plain miserable. I remember that I couldn't wait to get back to the room to rest.. (and it was 1 in the afternoon...) I spent alot of time worrying about the easiest way to walk from one place to the next. For my Dec trip.. I'm thinking about taking a pedometer just to see how far I do walk!! I'm always excited about my Disney trips...but even more so to feel the changes my new lifestyle brings!!

Good luck on your surgery! I haven't had this surgery myself, but since I frequent this particular board I have noted that this question is raised periodically. I would suggest you do a search, under this forum for "gastric bypass", and know you will find a number of previous threads on this topic that should be helpful.

Thanks for posting this question and to all the OP for their responses. I am scheduled for surgery in July, about four weeks after we get back from our upcoming trip.

Thanks for all the encouragement - I am pretty nervous about the surgery.

We try to keep our discussions on topic here on WDW Restaurants. If you like to discuss the gastric bypass procedure itself further, we have our WISH board here on the DIS where many share their experiences with that and other types of weight loss programs.
