Gas Prices????

Sunday we drove to Kutztown PA. I saw 1.39 and 1.65. Last week I paid 1.59. DH filled the tank yesterday-I don't want to know how much 10 gallons cost him.

1.72 here - and that was the cheapest I could find - thank heavens I only needed a 1/2 tank and for the lawn mower

Filled up with regular yesteray for $1.79 per gallon. Premium was $1.93 & I don't remember what the middle grade was... too high!

Ours went up about 15 cents overnight in Virginia. This morning on the radio, they said it was because of the blackout in the Northeast last week. I'd love to know how something that lasted less than 24 hours can affect our prices that much. (Maybe they are trying to make up for the lost revenue by gouging the rest of the country - LOL!)
Maybe I can help you understand the reason why the blackout effected the price of gas.

I work at the second largest oil refinery in the Western Hemisphere, and when one of our major producing units goes down even for a short time it immediately effects the prices of gas on the East Coast.

The blackout forced emergency shutdowns of the refineries in the N.E. and Mid-West which in of itself is very dangerous. When the power came back on, they have to go through meticulous startup procedures to get the units back up and running again. It is a VERY dangerous and very time consuming process that can take days and days. A unit that has not been brought back online properly could have very serious problems and could potentially explode.

So even though the power was only out for less than 24 hours, it can take up to a week or more to get a refinery up and running again.

Hope this helps clarify the situation a little.

Thanks for the info figmentvi! Now it makes sense. I didn't realize it too so long to get it back up.

Y'all come on down to the Alvin Wal-Mart!! I paid $1.459 for regular yesterday. :p

You guys should live with my grandpa!!!! All he ever talks about every time we see him is how much gas costs. Then all of the men just sit around and talk about how much gas costs in different cities. Its pretty funny sometimes because my aunt always complains about how they always talk about gas!!!!:bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Was $1.69 this morning for 87 grade. When I came home from work it was up to $1.74! Gas stations are trying to make us broke. Why does everything go up in price except our wages?

*For 87 grade I saw it anywhere from $1.61 at Sam's Club to $1.79 at BP near my work. $0.10 more per higher grade. I feel bad for people with gas hogs.

Gas prices are my pet peeve.

We were in Upper Michigan, took daughter to school and gas prices jumped during the day on Friday the 22nd. When I saw prices around $1.82 I almost cried, cause Michigan is always cheaper than WI. Yep, crossed the border and it was $2.00.

It would of been cheaper to fly her to school in a small prop job jet, then filling up twice her car and our diesel truck.

Gas in CT is anywhere from 1.89 to 2.10/ gallon depending on location of gas station [we have zone pricing here, same gas from same company delivered to there branded stations at different costs depending on location in the state] and the grade of gas you are getting.

Good thing I quit smoking 14 weeks ago. I need that money to keep gas in my car. LOL

As FigmentVI said, it takes a long time to start up a refinery. But another thing that impacts prices so quickly is the lack of storage space. Most people don't understand with all the tanks they see that most of those tanks are filling up then immediately emptied. It doesn't take long for a refinery to run out of gas once it goes down. That means some other refinery has to take up the slack. Also, any disruption in the movement of gasoline, such as the pipeline rupture in between Tuscon and Phoenix fills up the tanks just as quickly. Hence the refineries using that pipeline have to find other means of transporting the gasoline out of the refinery. Trucking is much more expensive than pipeline movements, and much more difficult logistically. Lots of trucks are required to keep up with production. (And these trucks usually aren't just standing by waiting, so gas movements are impacted in more areas.) If the trucks can not keep up, the refinery has to cut back production and this too impacts inventories which are already in short supply. With both sides of the country facing major problems affecting supply and production, prices have been impacted more dramatically. Then there are the tax issues. Neighboring states may have as much as 20 cents difference in taxes on gasoline at the pump.
Ok, ok, probably TMI! But when people start talking about gouging............I get annoyed! lol

Those prices are cheap! Here in the UK we pay around $5 a gallon  Needless to say not too many people drive great big cars!

You guys are soooo lucky. Last night I filled my car up and the cost was £4.04 a gallon. That is $6.26.

Can someone tell me why?

Do gas stations get deliveries every day? I've heard they can not raise their prices unless their price changes. I see gas stations raising their prices sometimes twice a day. This doesn't sound right to me.

Were being told our economy is on the upswing. Looks to me like that child credit is going into the pockets of gas conglomerates. What does this mean for us northerners who will have to heat our homes come winter. While I pre-purchase my heating oil for the winter, there are many who cannot.

Not good news for the republican party.

$1.84 a gallon. Why?

Disney may want to rethink their AP policy. I'm sure air fare is on the rise too.

Actually I asked that same question when I was working at my old place of employment , a large convenience store chain, and we used to get fuel delivery twice a week, yet the prices used to change daily. I was told they could legally do that , because when gas prices go down, they loose money , so when it goes up , they make up for what they loose when it goes down. But honestly, I have seen it go up more times than down. Right now up by my neck of the woods in the Poconos we are close to 1.90 for regular , I don't enjoy filling up my van!
