Gas or Electric Dryer?

I am purchasing a new washer and dryer today. Thanks to the disboards thread on front loaders, so much help was provided which helped to make my decision. I am purchasing the LG models at Home Depot. Maytag has a new model out (I know there have been tons or problems with the old ones) which LG makes now. Maytag is going to be alot more and I like the looks of the LG better. I have a 20% coupon at Home Depot which I am praying I can use on these.

Anyway, my question is should I get an electric or gas dryer. I can do either. We had an electric one when we first moved to our house and then to switched to a gas model which I have hated since the day I got it (Whirlpool). I never saw a difference in our electric bill. So, which do you think is more cost efficicent? Thanks!

I just bought the Whirlpool Duet set with an electric dryer and I'm really happy with both. Ditto what the other poster said about gas prices! I'd go with an electric dryer. I think the best selling point for gas dryers is that they dry faster (because they get hotter) - enabling the dryer to keep up with the washer so you will not have clothes sitting in the washer while you are waiting on a previous load to finish drying. However, I'm not so sure this is the case anymore - my new dryer can get plenty hot to keep up with it's friend (the washer);o)

We have gas everything on our house and I would definately choose to by a gas dryer again. Even with the price of natural gas this season, I don't know that the cost per load would be more than using electric. It MAY be, but I really don't know. :confused3

When I had an electric stove and electric dryer and ran them at the same time, my electric increased for the month, and it wasn't like I was using it more, it was just using so much electric at once. So I swiched to a gas dryer and still have electric stove, I have no problems now, at least with my bills. Just throwing out another idea to help decide. :-) I really can't tell the difference between the two, and I'm on budget for both gas and electric, so I can't complain about gas prices too much just yet.

Just remember, its not just gas rates that are/will be going up.

I have had 2 gas dryers and wouldn't go with anything else. I don't think they really cost that much to use. During the summer when gas prices were sky high, my gas bill wasn't more than $10 each month. This is basically to run my dryer and my water heaters. I don't consider that bad at all. Plus everything seems to dry faster than when I use the electric dryer at my mother's house.

You should contact your local utility company and ask them what they think would be cheaper for you to use, gas or electric. I highly doubt we are all paying the same thing for natural gas and electric costs.

:confused3 We all could post our December charges for gas but it won't be comparable due to different costs, different weather, insulation, and different temperature settings. While everyone is complaing how high their gas charges are I'm happy with mine being only $84.76 in December with that running the water heater, furnace and dryer in Northern IN.

We had a gad drier for 25 years but it was a real pain when I wanted to replace it installation wise. With electric you just unplug the old one and plug in the new one. I know you are just buying it and hopefully which ever kind you buy will last as long as my gas but it is still something to consider
