We bought and moved into this house about 6 months ago. We have not used the fireplace because we can't figure out how to turn it on!!
It was originally a wood-burning fireplace, but was converted to a gas fireplace b/f we moved in. Anyway...I don't think the pilot light is on and I can't figure out!! Any help....?!

I'll come light your fireplace if you'll come light my wood burning fireplace. I have no idea how it works. It's quite chilly here at night!

Call the gas company, they will be more than happy to help you. After all you will use more gas now. :lmao:

You should see a dial and next to it a red button.

Turn the dial all the way to one side, left or counter clockwise and then press it down. Holding the dial down press the red button. The pilot light will light. You need to keep holding the dial down. Do not let it lift up.

You need to hold the dial in for about a minute. If you let go before that the pilot light will go out.

Once the pilot light stays lit when you let the dial come back up you can turn the dial back the other direction, to the ‘on’ position.

Now when you turn on the fireplace it will come on.

We have a gas fireplace that does not have a pilot. We can use it with fake logs or as a gas-start fireplace with real wood.

We put a lit match in the fireplace and than turn the key in the wall to turn the gas on. Once it catches you can adjust the height of the flame. ***Don't turn the gas on first. I made that mistake once.

there is no red button !!!

I agree with pp, call the gas company. Better to be safe than sorry when dealing with gas. Can you contact the last owners to find out?

OK I’m going to start at the very beginning. Are you sure the gas fireplace has a pilot light?

Inside the fireplace should be a tube with a bunch of little holes. When on, the gas comes out of these little holes.

Somewhere along this tube, likely at one end, is the pilot light.

In the video I posted they have a close-up shot of this pilot light and the pizo igniter, the thing that makes the spark to light the pilot light when the red button is pressed.

Do you see something similar to this in your fireplace?

If you don’t have something similar to this then you may not have a pilot light.

You should still have something that allows you to turn the gas on and off and you would need to then light it each time with a match as another member reported above.

ok...there is a "key" to turn on the floor next to the fireplace... turned that on...THEN there is a pilot button...not red, but a knob that says to push to ignite...but nothing is happening when I do it

With ours all we do is flip a switch that looks just like a light switch.

But please call the gas company...that is what they are there for. They can check to see it is working properly and show you how to operate it.

Thats exactly how ours is, the thing to turn with the key is on the floor and then there is the pilot button. If it doesn't work, it sounds like your gas isn't turned on or you don't have gas in the line itself where you put the key in (the gas line is under there in our house).

Yeah, that;)

The gas line to the fireplace might be shut off if the people you bought the house from never used the fireplace or if they turned that off in the summer.

Mine has the key on the floor. I turn it on, you can hear the gas & then light it with matches or lighter. Like a bbq you have to light as soon as you turn on the gas.
Mine is wood burning with gas lighter.
