Would Garden Grill basically be the same as Chef Mickey's, as far as kids (8, 7, 4) go? If there are differences, I might want to book both, but if not, I would rather do something else instead of GG.
Character wise Chef Mickey's is Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, and Donald. They are dressed as chefs. Garden Grill is Mickey, Pluto, Chip & Dale. They are farmers. I would say the character interaction is much better at Garden Grill. The tables are on 2 levels and only 1 table deep on each level so the experience is more private. My kids LOVE this meal-they really enjoy overlooking the Living with the Land boat ride. The food however is just OK at best. As much as my kids enjoy this meal it is NOT on my list for my next trip.
I know lots of folks really enjoy the dinner at Chef Mickey's. I wasn't thrilled with it. I don't like prime rib or salmon and those seemed to be 2 top items on the menu. They did have a pasta dish I enjoyed but I like the food at the Crystal Palace much better. The characters were more rushed here.

I have never been to the Garden Grill but Chef Mickey's is a full blown buffet style meal. And from what I can read the Garden Grill is more of a family style meal. At Chef Mickey's, the characters are Goofy, Mickey, Pluto, Donald Duck, and Minnie. The atmosphere there is great and at one point all the characters dance around and swing white napkins. It is very cute. Looking at the menu for the Garden Grill, the food looks a little tastier.
The food at Garden Grill is more limited, I think we had fried catfish (peppery) turkey and bbq'd beef. Plus some kind of potatoes. They bring chicken fingers and mac and cheese for the kids (don't remember what else). We liked the food and go every trip.
Chef Mickey's has more variety.
I think you get more character interaction at Garden Grill because it is smaller.
We have been to both and the Garden Grill wins hands down! The interaction here was the best we have had at any Disney character meal. The characters also came around several times, this was last month.
We also thought the food was great. The server brings it all out starting with the bread and salad. Then the main meals and the childrens food. You can ask for more of anything you would like. The mashed potatoes were so good we got some more of those and DH got more steak which he really enjoyed. The dessert was also really nice and the kids got to decorate a cupcake which they enjoyed.
We did enjoy Chef Mickeys but we find that the characters are stretched for time so its only a quick visit and I don't think we have ever had them come around more than once. The food was pretty good, but standard buffet style really.
DH and I are eating at Chef Mickey for the first time in May but we are having breakfast instead of lunch or dinner. Will we enjoy the Breakfast food there?
I can't wait to just be at WDW.
I know lots of people love it, but our experience at CM was rushed and loud with average food. I prefer breakfast to dinner there if I had to choose. That is my adult point of view. Kids really enjoyed it, and I'm glad we have eaten there, but will be in no rush to go back.
GG dinner is a must do for us because DD6 is a HUGE Chip and Dale fan. They were amazing with her, best interaction we have ever had at a character meal, and we've been to lots! Food was decent and it was so much less hectic, and I didn't have to stand in line to get my food!
