Does anybody know where I can go to get a garage door opener fixed? Right now my garage doors are manual. When I bought the house, the opener was sitting on the floor of my garage where it still is. I'm pretty sure it was installed at one point- I can see the cut in the ceiling. I would like to be able to get it fixed but have no clue where to take it or how feasible it even is. I don't know how old it is, how long it was working, etc. I have no idea why it is on the floor of the garage, other than it is apparently missing a part. And no, I don't know what that part is. I also don't know where the remotes are. Is it even going to be worth my time/money to fix it at this point?

Depends what kind it is. If it's Craftmaster, that's Sears. If it's a Genie, you could look it up in the Yellow pages.

Could Sears actually fix it? I thought that if you had a problem with something you bought from them you had to bring it back while it was under warranty and they would replace it. I didn't realize they could actually fix things.

I know they have a regular repair service for appliances. You could call them and ask them. They do come out to the house to fix appliances or if they are small appliances you take them in. They don't have to be under warranty, but if not, then you pay for repairs.

Does it need to be fixed or installed? If it doesn't work chances are it is less expensive to buy a new one. If you need it installed you can either call a handyman or an overhead door company (look in the yellow pages). The garage door openers are not that expensive. If you have a friend that is handy and are willing the installation isn't hard, just time consuming.

We had installed a Genie about 4 years ago, top of the line, it was a piece of crap. It literally snatched the door up every time (this is a double width 8 foot tall door mind you). Within 18 months it had cause a stress crack on the door where it was attached to the opener. We wound up disconnecting it and opening manually for quite a while. I broke down and had a new door installed in March (over $1200!), then the Genie refused to open it. This is one with a lifetime warranty, but they want you to try all these things to fix it yourself first, then you must ship it back, etc. I was fed up and just called a company here in town to come install a Liftmaster with battery back up, etc. It is ten times better and a whole lot quieter, without the constant yanking. I'd probably just call around and try to get a new opener with warranty protection before trying to repair one that has been sitting for a while. Our was top of the line, installed for $399 (with tax)

Garage door openers need to be adjusted properly and often need a support plate to ensure that they don't actually damage the garage door. Happily garage door openers are 1) not expensive and 2) fairly inexpensive to have installed. Check your yellow pages for "Garage Doors and Openers" to find someone in your area that can install/fix your garage door opener. Alternatively, you can go to the store of your choice (Sears, Lowes, Home Depot) to buy a new unit and schedule the install.

I would not mess with the tension springs, and I am very mechanicaly inclined. If they are the coil springs the run horizontal near the top of the door they need a special wrench for adjusting.

when working on coils springs for a car or truck it is common to chain the spring to the body so if it slips it does not fly out and take someone's head off.

you should be able to get free estimates from any reputable local overhead door company. tell them you are getting two estimates and they will give you their best price first, without haggleing.
