Hello everyone! We drive to Disney from NJ and I would love some suggestions for games I can buy for the long ride that I could play with my kids. Last year I got DD "Guess Who" which was fun; I could play with her from the front seat, and there weren't any small parts to lose. DD is 5 and DS will be 2 1/2 when we go. Thanks in advance!

Crayola Model Magic is fun and very clean. They can form it into all kinds of shapes over and over. Kneading 2 colors together to make one can take up a lot of time! It doesn't crumble or smudge like play-doh at all.

Sometimes we try to find semis in every color of the rainbow. Yellow and purple sometimes take a while. The summer my daughter was between 1st and 2nd grade, everywhere we went she tallied the colors of semis. White is the most common! If your DS knows his colors, he could call them out for your DD if she is able to tally (I don't remember when kids learn their colors!).

If you are on non-interstate roads, play count the ???. Each child gets one side of the road and see who can find the most cows or red cars or flags or whatever will be a frequent sight.

Go by your local Cracker Barrel. They have a ton of games and books etc that are great for travel. They have a set of questions called brain quest that are age geared. You can read them to the kids.

Read them books without a lot of pictures.Find a poem book or nursery rhymes or bible stories or whatever you like. You can read without keep turning around to show the pictures.

Use technology. Ipads, Iphones, DVD players whatever.

Color Wonder coloring paper, a roll of masking tape, pipe cleaners, stickers books, glass markers to draw on the windows.

We simply do not stop much when we travel, about every 4 hours but if you do stop, make good use of the time. If you do fast food, choose a play area place and let the kids play while you eat and get their food to go. Pack food from home and stop at a nice rest area (state welcome centers are good). Pack a ball or two and let the kids play while you eat and then again, feed them in the car.

When we have really needed to stop a little longer a few times, we have found a Mall not far off of our route and ate in the food court. Most times there is some sort of amusement near the food court that only takes a few extra minutes and it is climate safe!

We take a long road trip every summer from CT to NC. I would always pack tons of snacks, toys, games, DVDs, etc. They would loose pieces, drop things, whine about who had what...ugh! I dreaded road trips.

This year, I packed nothing except a big binder of DVDs and they all had their own iPods. I didn't even pack food. It was heaven!! We drove and stopped at regular times to eat and get gas. If we came upon a Redbox, we'd grab a new movie.

On the trip home, about midway, we stopped at a dollar store and grabbed some crayons and coloring books. Minimal was surprisingly the best thing we've ever done. My kids are 13,6,5,3.

The redbox is a great idea! Wouldn't have thought of that

We play a lot of games having to do with Disney. We guess Disney attractions based on hints. We do lists for various letters (Disney characters starting with B or things you see at WDW starting with P), we say lines and people have to name the character we are, we do Disney Hedbandz without the actual game. One if us decides on a character for someone else and then the questions start. My girls are now 5&7 but we have been doing some version of these since 3&5 - at this point the kids come up with new game ideas. Latest from DD5 - we take turns asking questions and everyone has to answer (who is your favorite princess and why, what is your favorite thing to eat at Disney, if you worked at DL - which job would you choose, etc)

Now that its just dw and I in the car. Dw has nobody to talk to so we play who can be quiet the longest! Lol

The 5 yo is ready for all kind if camp games. Not only are they good for the car but lines and anytime the kids are restless. Think like I Spy and 20 questions. Google camp games and you will find tons of them.

DD gets car sick :crazy2:

so we play a lot of Alphabet games.

Find the letter A.
Say the letter and the word. A as in Interstate.
Say a Disney thing that starts with A. A as in Aurora. princess:

Go to Cracker Barrel and get the road bingo game which is cute and fun. You could always us the tribal pursuit cards just to go over your disney trivia if you have that game. Disneys apples to apples or car or you could make it for the car.

Thank you all for your suggestions! We have all the extras (DVD players, tablet, coloring books), already got some new movies for the ride too...but the Guess Who game was such a hit, we really wanted to get another board game for this years trip. We don't have a Cracker Barrel right by us, but when we go in FL, I will check it out for the ride home. Will check out the board game ideas when we go. I'll see what she thinks! Will most likely be going to Toys R Us. We have played the "on the road" type games, but they never last long. We really did play that board game a good portion of the trip. Will be bringing it again, just wanted one or two more so its no so repetitious.

Barnes and Noble usually has a section with just games....and actually a little section within that area with travel games. My kids have travel trouble already but I picked up a magnetic tic-tac-toe travel game and a travel connect 4 just the other day for our upcoming trip. Otherwise...I think we're like the rest here...iPads/iPods, DVD players and coloring/activity books.

Now that my daughter and son are getting a little older...I was going to try to find maybe an audio book that would be age appropriate but I'm not sure I'll end up finding one in time and I'm guessing yours are still quite young for that.

Glad I found this thread though...I like the Redbox idea too!

Is your DD old enough to start "collecting" license plates? This was a favorite in my family growing up when we traveled. We had a list and tried to get three of every state/providence during the trip. Not only did it keep our minds busy while looking our the window, but it was quiet educational too and led to discussions about how Alaskans have plugs on their cars and the mottos/importance of each state by analyzing the design of the plates.

Books-on-tape and educational apps are a great idea too. You can buy a few before your trip and only let them play with those while in the car to keep it interesting.

When I was growing up my parents let us take several stuffed animals with us on each trip and we would fill up the boring hours with creative play. Even if we were sick of each other, our stuffed animals always got along and it really helped keep the peace on some very long car trips. If a new animal joined the family on vacation, we would make up stories about its past, likes/dislikes, and personality using all that we had learned on the trip. It really helped us process our trips (which were highly educational as opposed to sitting on a beach) on our level.

Neat idea especially for waiting in attractions lines.

I was just reading a trip report where while waiting for meals they would play "Do You Like..." Parents would ask a question starting with Do you like... and the kids would answer with thumbs up (yes), thumbs down (no), or thumb sideways (neutral). A simple way to pass a little time and maybe learn something about your kids.
