Another vote for Game Boy Advance SP, I think this is a great unit and with the price coming down you can't beat it. We got DS his first Game Boy when he was 5, it was a Game Boy Color. We bought it because we were going to be flying to Italy and it really came in handy. We bought the Color even though Advance was out because we weren't sure DS would stick with it, well I was wrong and at the time, wished we had gone for the more expensive one with the better features. We ended up buying DS the Game Boy Advance SP last year for his 7th birthday and he has gotten a ton of use out of it (and we think it is one of the better units to date). We do limit his usage especially if it is a nice day. Also, this summer it was incentive for DS to do extra chores around the house because he wanted the new Pokemon games that were just released on Friday and didn't want to wait for Santa to bring it. He was constantly looking for extra things to do around the house, which was great for me, and taught him a lesson about earning.
