Galloway Magic Mile Question

I'm training for my first race longer than a 5k which will be the Wine and Dine half in October. I'm wondering about Galloway's magic mile race pace predictor. He says for every 5 degrees over 60 degrees you should add 30 seconds to your predicted race pace. What if the temperature when I do the magic miles is in the low to mid 80s? Should I still add time to my pace for temperatures over 60 degrees?

I am not familiar with the magic mile predictor, but I do know many of us do a slower event as the temps rise. I don't think it is as noticeable for me until the 70s+ especially if the sun is beating down on me.

I think you have to factor how you have been training as well. If you have been running out in the crazy heat and humidity that seems to be everywhere these days, you should have somewhat of an advantage. But, it really can't hurt to add that extra time on. If you end up doing a lot better than the prediction, won't you be thrilled? It is kind of like when the mechanic at the shop tells you it will take them all day to repair your car, and then you get it back in a few hours. :) Regardless, I haven't used his predictor but I do notice that my time does suffer a bit when it gets too warm. Likewise, it seems to go the other way for me at least. I don't like being too cold either!

I've been doing Galloway this time around and unfortunately, this is something I don't know the answer to either. I haven't done a Magic mile since June. Looking back at my records, the Temp was 73 outside but the humidity was low. It was my best MM to date. With MM run at 80, my best guess would be to add time for temp. above 70. I'll pose the question to someone who might know the answer and get back to you.

Short answer NO

Assuming a MM average at 80F and you will be heading to a race at 70F..... You should expect to run faster. Using Jeff's factors, by a minute a mile. If the race is 60F; 2 minutes a mile. 50F, still 2 minutes a mile.

Note that I would not just jump on the faster pace .... Use some common sense and run the pace that the day brings.

Thanks for all of your replies! I think I will keep checking on my pace over the next few weeks here and come race time I'll *try* to start out a little slower than my projected pace. After a few miles I'll see if I feel good enough to step it up a bit.
