Day 4: August 16, 2003: You Have 13 Boyfriends?

Wow, I’m slipping. This time Mickey calls and actually wakes me up. The long days are finally taking their toll!

This morning we’re off to Epcot for a full day. I’m getting a little sick of our rations, so when I head over for coffee I pick up some cinnamon rolls for the kids and I. They are huge and yummy.

I decide to bring out my big, ancient, 35mm SLR camera for the trip to Epcot. This, coupled with my half-gallon cooler bottle really wears me down so I decide I’m doing some camera bag shopping today. We get our fast-passes for Mission:Space, then split up so I can camera-bag hunt. I check the camera shop, and all they have are little camera bags or a camcorder bag that I don’t think will be much better than my old camera bag. I keep looking, thinking I can find a small backpack or something, but no dice. At one point I pick up a black bag and there is all these black flecks all over my hands and arm. I keep finding this stuff the rest of the day, and wonder what the heck it is.

Lots of fruitless shopping and I decide to meet up with the gang. I turn on my walkie-talkie and page them constantly, walking from one end of future world to the other. No answer. These walkie-talkies are great but sometimes there are just big holes in the service. I can never predict when or where it is going to happen.

It takes quite a while before they finally come through. They had been in the Living Seas and were surprised there is no more ride there. When we meet up, R points out that I have black stuff all over my new white Mickey shirt! I finally realize it’s the darn camera bag that is flaking. After 15 years, it is definitely time for a new one.

It’s just about time for Mission:Space so we head there. Again, the FP line is pretty much a walk-on and we have to do some shuffling before boarding to try to get everyone in their desired roles. Saba is pilot, R navigator, JL commander and I’m engineer. I had no ill effects from this yesterday, not a one, but even walking on to this I start feeling ill. By the time we land on Mars, I’m slightly queasy and have a mild headache. This would continue for hours. I’m bummed about that because I had such a good experience the day before and I love this ride! Maybe it has something to do with already feeling ill earlier.

This time we take time to linger in the post-show area. The kids play in the tubes, and I go off and record an e-mail and send it to my brother. It’s pretty cheesy. I get the kids to come over and record one of their own, theirs is funnier. That one I send to Mom and Dad, hoping their e-mail is finally working again (boy, I thought I’d never say that phrase—must be the 21st century!).

We go to Journey into the Imagination and ride the Figment ride. It’s cute, not spectacular. As soon as we walk out into the interactive area, a CM asks for a volunteer, and my never-shy Saba puts her hand up high. He puts her in a white lab coat and puts glasses on top of her glasses. He starts asking the usual questions, where are you from, how old are you, then asks her if she has a boyfriend. She says 13. He says, oh, you can’t have a boyfriend until your 13, that’s good. She says, “NO, I have THIRTEEN BOYFRIENDS!” She really believes she has 13 boyfriends, and doesn’t much care if these boys know they are her boyfriends or agree to it. Some of these are fictional characters, I must say. Here’s little scientist Saba.

We finish up there and linger over the interactive exhibits when JL and I come across the photos. Saba already has two photos—one for R&RRC and one from ToT, so I tell JL to pick out one he wants to do. He decides to go skydiving with Mickey, and it turns out really cute.

We decide to check out The Circle of Life because it might be Saba’s only (though slim) chance to see Kiara, her favorite character. Off all the characters in the Disney kingdom, why does she have to choose such an obscure one as the ONLY character she wants to see in WDW? We see the film, and R is muttering darn-liberal-tree-huggers as we walk out, but the kids and I love it. Saba is a self-proclaimed tree-hugger (I think our tree at home may even be one of the 13 boyfriends) and it’s right up my alley also. We head down to the food court, and the kids and I go up to get food. I pick two things, thinking R can choose either one of them and I’ll eat the other, but none of it is very good and we’re not happy campers. I’m starting to appreciate the idea of getting PSs before going, and hope we’ll get a good meal tonight.

Off to Test Track with the FPs we got before M:S. The FP queue is a little long because they had a breakdown. JL is really, really nervous, but I remind him that I wouldn’t have him go on anything I knew would scare him and ask him to trust me. R reminds him that we’ll go no faster than we did driving to Pittsburgh. He’s on edge all the way in, but he doesn’t bolt.

We make it through and JL admits that he enjoyed it and it wasn’t that scary. While I hate roller coasters, I do love the thrill of going FAST around that track and really enjoy this ride again. We linger in the post-show area looking at the cars and picking out our favorites. I wonder who REALLY needs a Hummer.

We’re all about ready for a little break so we head back to the resort. Epcot is exhausting, it’s just so huge, and we haven’t even made it to World Showcase yet. On our break I get in touch with my mother and my brother and find out that the blackout wasn’t too bad back home. Brother got a snow day in August and Mom and Dad were just a bit inconvenience in going out to dinner.

Back to Epcot and the World Showcase to try to find a decent place for dinner. We stop in Germany and find only a 30-minute wait for the Biergarten. We browse through the shops, get some treats for the kids to tide them over, and the time passes quickly. I’ve always wondered why people waste their time shopping in WDW, but I understand now when I see all the neat things they have in the shops. Our buzzer rings, and when we’re seated, we’re so hungry that we go right to the buffet before the waitress even takes our drink order. I’m relieved that the food is different, at the very least, and it’s actually quite tasty. The band starts up and Saba has a blast dancing. I even drag JL out there for a quick polka, much to his chagrin. We have a great time here and are in no hurry to run out. I’m not even too upset that it’s getting close to Illuminations time and the only country we’ve done is Germany.

R has gone out ahead and found a small spot right outside for us to watch Illuminations. Everyone is tired during the short wait, but it’s all worth it when that sky lights up. What a great show. I’ve seen this one before, but it’s still pretty amazing.

R decides he’ll leave ahead of us to get to the bus stop to hold our place. JL, Saba and I walk out casually with the crowd, and again the crowds are not scary or unruly, though I hold on tight to both of them. We even stop and take a couple of pictures. As we exit the park and head toward the bus stop, R pages us on the walkie-talkies and tell us the bus is there. We RUN for the first time and catch up just in time. It’s SRO, but it’s a bus and a short ride back to the resort.

Not a hugely productive day, but it’s worth spending time LINGERING at Epcot. I think we’d need three full days to do it properly.

Stay tuned for Day 5: Ooh, They Have Pac Man!:) :)

Glad you enjoyed the Biergarten. I think I'm going to try that place on my next trip. You're right, Epcot does need a few days in order to see everything. I don't think most people realize that. I plan on spending more time in WS on my next trip. I usually rush through it and miss a lot of the sights.

Thanks for the reports!

Wonderful trip report ~Thanx for sharing!!!!

Sitting here chuckling as after nearly 20 years, I too am still holding onto my 35mm SLR camera. I got a beige fabric bag with mine and it's still going strong.

Oh, but the pictures! I got most of mine back today and they are just beautiful! My three-year-old digital is falling apart but my 15+ year-old SLR is in perfect shape (couldn't say the same for the bag, though!).

thanks for the great reports! Never been (yet) and am really enjoying these.
