I have shipped suitcases on Fedex many times from various locations over the past few years. I have a FEDEX account. Most of the time, the fees have been similar to the airlines and I enjoy less hassle at the airport, especially traveling with kids.
Yesterday, I went to the FEDEX/Kinkos located near Downtown Disney to drop off my 2 suitcases, which I have shipped many times before. This location smacked me with a $18 surcharge ($9 per suitcase), because it was not "encased in a cardboard box!" I spoke to the manager and mentioned I have never been charged such a fee nor does this appear anywhere on their website. I called the 800-fedex number and the agent on the phone had no idea why this location was charging this fee and he never heard of it being applied to a suitcase (it is commonly used for shipping golf clubs). The manager said ANY item not in a cardboard box is not encased and thus will be assessed the fee.
Bottom line - AVOID shipping from this FEDEX location if you are shipping a suitcase!!
