Just wanted to pass along this info. We just got back from a week in Disney. Unfortunately, after day 3, my 4 yr. old became very ill. She was sick all day Sunday - seemed to be herself Monday so we did a few low-key things - got sick again Monday evening into Tuesday morning. We were due to fly out Wednesday morning and I was concerned about her ability to travel. Usually (as you know) kids seem to bounce back from viruses - they don't seem to get worse on day three...Anyway, I was thinking maybe this was some sort of serious virus - or maybe an ear infection. She had had pneumonia about two months ago, which was caused by a virus, so I was getting very worried. I called the front desk (we stayed at WL) and they gave me the number for Florida Hospital Centra-Care. I called them - they said they have a free shuttle to take you to the clinic - OR - they also offer an in-room physician service. They told me a doctor could be at my room at 10:30, give her an exam and write out a prescription if needed. (A pharmacy called Turner drugs will deliver, too).

I made the appointment - the doctor was at my room right on time - and brought his equipment with him in a rolling suitcase. He checked her ears, throat, lungs and even gave her a rapid strep test just to be sure. He filled out the necessary paperwork for me to send off to my insurance company (I don't know if it will be covered BUT I don't care - it was worth every penny not to have to take her to a clinic where we were told we may have to wait up to four to five hours).

I just wanted to pass this info. along. I didn't know about this service and unfortunately, we had to use it. But - it was GREAT. The doctor was prompt, very professional and made me and my daughter feel at ease. He seemed to be very thorough as well. The best part was, we didn't have to leave the hotel room and she stayed comfortable.

Happily, her ears and all checked out fine so it must have been a virus - she began feeling better that night. My husband and I had a better night's sleep knowing that we had her checked out. We weren't worrying that she might need to be on medication and we didn't know it.

Just wanted all the parents out there to keep this in mind. Hopefully, you won't have to use the info. but I just wanted to share it.

Thanks so much for sharing this information. We are going to WDW for the first time May 7-14. My son has asthma, which often results in an upper respiratory infection or pneumonia. I am concerned that, with the change in climate, he may suffer a flare-up of his asthma. It is so nice to know that medical attention and a pharmacy will be available if necessary.

Thanks for sharing that; I hope it won't be necessary but, it's good to know.

Thank you for posting your experience...I hope you guys had a great time otherwise. :(

Unfortunately, a few years ago, we had to call the doctor's service for my 18 month old DD. She was running a low grade fever and just wasn't "herself". We were staying at POFQ and when we called the front desk, they gave me the number of the doctor services. I called (it was about 1:00 AM), and they said the Dr would be by around 9:00 that morning. He was right on time, and was able to get her a prescription for Amoxil. In no time at all, she was back to being "herself", which made a much more enjoyable trip for the rest of the family! It is so hard to be away from home with a sick child.

Glad your little one starting feeling better!!!

i am so glad you posted this. We leave next week for our 1st trip with baby. Today, I had the very thought of what will we do if he gets sick! :) I am sorry your dd was sick at wdw!

We had a similar situation with our 3 year old a few years back. We were at Magic Kingdom and she started complaining about a very sore ear (screamed if anyone would touch it).

We weren't staying at a Disney resort, but went to the first aid station in Magic Kingdom. They said they couldn't treat her there, but contacted a free shuttle service to transport us to a near by doctor. He diagnosed "swimmer's ear" and wrote a script. We went next store to the drug store, picked up the script, and then the shuttle transported us back to Magic Kingdom. Everything was covered by our insurance as a normal office visit.

The whole process only took about 2 hours!

Thank you all for your kind comments. Yes, we still did manage to have a great trip despite my daughter's illness. She did a lot beforehand (three parks, Hoop-dee-doo, Fantasmic). My husband and I "switched shifts" - taking turns caring for her and taking my older daughter to the parks/to swim, etc.
I think, because my daughter is only 4, she felt like she got to do everything - she didn't feel like she missed out at all. An older child might be more upset at having to spend so much time lying in bed in a hotel room. Fortunately, she began to feel better pretty quickly and was back to normal before we knew it.
As I said before, just wanted to pass along this info. I sincerely hope you don't have to use it - it's just nice to have it in the back (way back!) of your mind.

Thanks for the info. We'll be leaving for WDW tomorrow and I currently have one child with an ear infection and the other with a sinus infection. I'm bringing an entire pharmacy-worth of meds with us, but it's nice to know there is quality care if we need it!

I hope your daughter is feeling lots better!
