FW cabin compared to Old Key West

Has anyone stayed at both Old Key West and the FW cabins? We've stayed at OKW twice (in a 1 BR villa) and really liked it. We're considering a stay in a FW cabin, but don't know if it will be too rustic for us. We have two kids, and we like a little extra space, and a quiet area. How are the pools at FW? Are they crowded? We will be going in late August. Thanks.

Re: Ft Wilderness Cabin being "too rustic" for you, all I have to say is:
One Bathroom

Of course my wife's idea of roughing it is sleeping on a pull out couch, so for our family, the choice would be clear.

We have stayed at both. The 1br villa at OKW is much more spacious. It also has the benefit of the washer/dryer and a much larger bathroom.

Although we have a vehicle when there and tend to drive, we didn't like the bus service at FW as well either.

It's not a bad place to say but we personally liked OKW much better. From the rooms to the pools.

Everyone likes something different so you may like it more than us. There were 2 adults and 1 child.

I've stayed a both and the biggest drawback to me is no whirlpools at Fort Wilderness.

We have stayed at both... and in my opinion there is no comparison. OKW wins by a landslide. ;)

I agree w/Tgr. theres just no comparison. Although,,your kids may love the bunks at WC,,or the Murphy bed,,but the rooms at OKW are just bigger,,more room to spread out. And the pool at WC does get crowded. That being said,,they do have the nightly movie by the pool which is neat, and the campfire. If it were me,,i'd pick OKW every time.

Thanks to everyone who replied. All of your input will help me figure out where to stay. Thanks again and I'd welcome input from anyone else!

Another thing to think about is that you can probably get the OKW room more cheaply since you can rent DVC points on the DVC Rent/ Trade board right here on the DIS. But I'm sure you've already done this.

We've stayed at both & enjoy both very much, but I do have to agree that the OKW 1BR's are much more spacious & a big plus is the washer/dryer.

FW is a great place to stay though. It is very quiet & there is a lot to do there.

I am sure you would enjoy either place, but I do believe OKW has more space.

Thanks again for the help. Gives me a lot to consider.
Hey, Melsmice, I have relatives in Lancaster. We love to visit there.

We enjoy it here too - but we'd rather live in Disney!!!!!

We have stayed at both places and the only reason I would pick a cabin over OKW would be if you wanted the "camping" experience. The cabins are great, but nothing compared to a gorgeous OKW 1-bedroom (which, by the way, also has only 1 bathroom, albeit a huge one). If you want to try out a more "Frontierland" type of experience, Ft. Wilderness is for you. The cabins have a full kitchen like the 1-bedroom but the bathroom is a lot smaller, no jacuzzi tub. No washer and dryer in the cabin either. Housekeepers do come every day, if this is important to you. You can park at your campsite just like you can park out front at OKW. Transportation is faster from OKW.

Decisions, decisions. We loved the cabins, but going ANYWHERE after OKW is hard... The place spoils you! :)

I have never been to OKW and it sounds nice. My family has always used the FW cabins. Using the golf carts is a riot and you can really get around. It is so nice at night to take the carts and to to the beach area there and watch the water light parade there. The pools are nothing special but they were never busy and just relaxing. It is nice taking the carts to the ferry that goes to the Magic Kingdom, it is awesome. My family never wants to try anything else. Now that they are married, we had to rent 2 cabins but right together and we had a blast. But OKW does sound great too.

I have stayed at both and both are very nice resorts.
OKW rooms win by a landslide. They are much bigger and nicer.
But FW wins as far as easy access to MK and numerous dining options (at the very close by MK resorts), and resort activities for children. With little children you will probably spend a lot of time at MK and the boat from FW is a very easy way to get there. FW also has great activities for kids: petting zoo, pony rides, campfire, movies with a visit from Chip and Dale, Hoop Dee Do Revue, Mickey's barbeque, etc. FW is a fantastic resort for families with young children.
Have a great trip!
