Fw animals and crock pot ?

Wow, you are really having a rough time, aren't you? And you're not even there yet! Sorry about all this, but it's the whole leaving things out cooking unattended that could be the problem. Between the squirrels and r'coons there are some wiley creatures there. The smell lingers and draws them back to try to find more, even if they don't find a way to get the crockpot lid off.

If you really are planning on cooking on the table, I would just put a crate over the pot and weight it down. Then, just hope for the best!

Hey a crate over the top is an awesome idea! I am going to let DH know this idea (he is the cook). We have some large cement bricks (12x12 kind) that we use to "tile" some outdoor areas that we could always bring to put on top of the crate.

Or you could use bungees/rope/twine and tie it to the table.

Not being a camper, and planning to camp at FW in Dec, I've been really interested in this thread. I like the plastic crate with bungees which would also allow me to have a garbage bag on the top as an additional protection from rain. (I would leave the sides open for ventilation.) I also like to be prepared. (mom of an eagle scout) Thanks for a great thread!

I'm glad I'm not the only 1!!!! Thanks for the addition of the garbage bag (vented) for rain. I also like the crate but I think I may still use small gauge wire because I'm afraid the squirrels will chew through the bungee cord. Unless there is something we could soak the bungee cord in that the squirrels would find repellant.

Be sure any garbage bag or the like does not touch the crock pot which could catch fire....and allow for wind. And remember that's your food in there, so anything you soak a bungee cord in should not contaminate the food if it leaks or touches.

What? You don't want us to burn the camp ground down?! Or smell it up with squirrel repellant? Or disrupt the Christmas peace with poison control responders? Kidding.

I think the idea is to put the bag over the crate. ?

I'll probably try to tarp everything around me though so I might not need a bag. My whole car will be filled up with the crate for the crockpot, a cinder block to hold the crate down on top of the crockpot and a 30 x 40 tarp to keep it dry. ROFL!

The things I do to provide my DD and DH with a hot (cheap) meal!

(I think the joy of seeing the end of the work week has made me hysterical.)

Was just at the fort last week. Let me tell you those Squirrels are a pain.
They got into the dinning tent and every thing in it. We had some bags we were going to use as daily garbage bags..... not one was usable as they put holes in all of them. The pushed the toaster on to the ground and took it for a walk. I would make sure you have a way of keeping the lid on the crock pot.
As far as an animated decoration I don't think it would bother them that much. The ones we had would play hide a seek on the trees and wait till you left to get into trouble.

Just heard on NPR that there is a population boom of squirrels due to last years mold winters and bumper crop of nuts. University of Michigan is experimenting with birth control for squirrels.

(The squirrels are stripping the apple trees.)

Okay, I'm preping for my trip (as most of you know) and I'm a tenter. So, I'm planning my slow cooker crock pot meals, the thing is, do I need to be worried about animals?

I'll be leaving the crock pot, which has a glass lid, for 6 - 8 hours with food stuffs slowly cooking while everyone is away from our tent site.

Do I need to be concerned about animals attempting to eat MY food while I'm off theme parking it up? I sure don't want to return worn out and find no food and a busted crock pot. I am hoping to bring two tents (if space allows, I haven't done the run through pack yet), should I put the crock pot in the tent?
