I am seeing ads for furniture sales around President's Day. We need a new sofa for the living room, but have absoultely no idea how to decide what brand. Does anyone have suggestions on what we should look for in terms of materials, construction, etc.? Any certain brands that are good quality or stores you would recommend? I used to think Lazy Boy was a quality brand, but have read that many of their items are now cheaply made and don't last long. Any help is appreicated.

I'm a LazyBoy fan so that's the direction I'd go. Just as important to me is customer service because DH and I don't want to haul anything or set it up. I shop local and ask about delivery, set up, etc. Another tip: look around the main showroom for ideas and then go to the clearance area for actual purchase. You'd be amazed at the savings on items the store wants to move for whatever reason. The store we use delivers free, sets up free, and hauls away the old piece free. The also make deals if you buy multiple pieces from them. Can't beat that :worship:

I hate lay-z-boy. Used to swear by them, but no more! My last couch from them literally fell apart after less than 2 years of use. And that was the frame! I'm still shocked I paid that much for a piece of crap couch that fell apart so quickly. And it was just myself and my husband sitting on it, as my daughter was an infant when this happened.
That being said, I invested in a Flexsteel living room set after that. They are amazing and after 5 years it shows almost no wear - frame or otherwise. And that is with a family of four (2 kiddos) using it constantly.

Not sure where you should go, I do know that you should NOT go with Ashely. Stay far far far away!

My husband only wants Lazy Boy because he wants to put his feet up every night.

They've always lasted years at our house - the current furniture is 10 years old now and still ok.

I don't know how the newer ones hold up though.

The couch that I have now is Lazy Boy and I will never, ever buy another Lazy Boy product again!!! The fabric has not held up at all and it has never been very comfortable. I've regretted the purchase of this furniture from day 1. (It is a large sectional with microfiber fabric. I don't know if they have other fabrics that hold up better or not).

I'm now looking at buying new furniture to replace our crummy sofa and loveseat, so that is why I was checking out this thread. I'm hoping to see a recommendation for furniture that will hold up well. I'm not familiar with Flexsteel, so I will have to check and see who carries that brand.

Not a Lay-z-Boy either. Got couch/love seat/recliner and the extra warranty years ago and when I needed some service, I got the run around. Layzboy claimed the warranty is handled by a third party company but that's not what I was told when I gave them the $4000. I had to fight for months and months to get it resolved. I finally did though.

Our most recent (1.5 yrs) is a sectional from Rooms To Go. I've also heard mixed reviews on them. Purchase price was good, financing was great, delivery was great. So far, so good. And if we do have problems with it I won't care as much because we only paid about 1/2 as much.

I have good luck with Haverty's Furniture. Not sure who makes there stuff but what we have bought has really held up. There customer service is excellent as well.

We have had our couch and recliner chair for 18 years. The frame and fabric has held up really well. No rips, tears or sagging. We had the fabric coated with something similar to scotch guard. The recliner had a problem with it and they were out the next day to fix it with no hassle. It was under warranty. Their customer service is excellent and they have been in business for over 60 years.

We love them so much that our new living room set is comming tomorrow. We got a great deal with no interest for 2 years.

I'm a huge Lay Z Boy fan here. We replaced our Haverty's built bounces after 7 years with a Lay Z boy set. The Haverty's set came in with problems. A needle was found in the cushion, the never finished the back, etc. We kept it only because my sister-in-law was the asst. manager and we got a good deal. But no custom built couch set should look that bad after only a few years. We ended up slip covering it after about 3 years. We replaced the set with a Lay Z Boy set that is awesome! It has held up well through newborn spit, kids jumping, etc.

:thumbsup2 This. We spent so much for a leather living room set, along with entertainment center, end tables and coffee table -- what a waste. The veneer from the tables and center chips off if you look at it sharply, and the sofa looks like it's 25 years old (it's only 4 years old). I will never ever buy La-Z-Boy again.

We bought a flexsteel sofa, chair and ottoman, as well as a lazyboy rocker recliner 9 years ago. The lazy boy started looking rough when it was only a few years old. The fabric has completely worn out, and the shape of the chair has completely flattened out. In comparison, the flexsteel looks terrific. The fabric is in perfect conditon. The seat cushions are slightly flatter than when they were new, but overall you would never ever guess the age of the flexsteel furniture. We have been very satisfied.

I know it was about this time of year when we bought it. We bought it at a store called The Comfort Shop, but that may be a local store. It was a flexsteel sale though. By buying 3 pieces (sofa chair ottoman) we got like 40-50% off.

Good luck!

What's wrong with Ashley? I am looking at a new bedroom set from there, but still undecided.

It's made like crap! Three years ago we bought a recliner couch and love seat. A bedroom set, king size, night stands, dresser, chest and armoire. We got DS a loft bed (bunk bed) with desk. We purchased insurance for the couches. Well last year the recliners broke. I had to fight with them, since I was told the insurance would cover it, and it didn't. They sent wrong parts and were so nice to only charge me 1/2 the cost of labor. :confused3

DS's keyboard drawer broke on his desk. Last week our bed broke! Yes, the railing broke off of the bed...the metal part was put in the grain instead of against it. We paid for parts and for shipping, adn they sent us the "wrong" part. And then argued with DH that even though ours was 98 and the part they sent was 99, that it was correct. Sigh...

We had emailed the bozo from last year...but the email was bounced back. I sent filled out a form on their website, but of course I got back the lovely email that all their stores are indepently owned so I have to contact them...but they did forward the email to them.
Now I will say the person that we dealt with was awesome and apologized and after hearing all we went trhough sent the new part with men to fix it at no extra cost. Now the parts they came with were the same that we were shipped) but they came with an entire new bottom of the bed, because it was TOTALLY REDESIGNED!! Guess this had happened before?? :confused3 So they replaced tow bed rails, and the woooden supports and replaced those with metal. So yes I am happy, but why didn't the service ppl know that the bed was redisgned??

Oh, also, they no longer use that insurance company, and she is sending an inspector to look at DS's drawer and DH's chest drawer that had broken.

So, 3 years and all those broken pieces. So if you want crap furniture that won't last...then buy Ashley...otherwise...look elsewhere.

Oh and our DS bought a couch of theres from another store and it is now broken, its only about 5 years old. So there ya go.

Wow! That's horrible, sorry you are going through that. I found a bed I liked from them that was inexpensive(cheap) and it seemed to good to be true. I wasn't sold on it and was afraid it was cheaply built as well. I think I will keep looking.

I hope you can get everything straightened out and it all works in your favor.

Ashley in Raleigh closed (just checked and they only closed the store with their name on it - they are now here under the name Home Comfort :confused3) We bought Laz E Boy all leather recliners about 6 years ago and they are still going strong. We've never had any regrets and they are used everyday. Havertys in Raleigh are not good - very poor quality, and the store here and in Smithfield is trashy. We looked a long time before we bought, so good luck in your searching :goodvibes .

Sams Club! Bought our king bedroom set, a desk and two end tables. No problems and all very good quality.

We are getting ready to build a house and will need alot of new furniture. We are looking at Sams Club for our bedroom because we want to change to all contemporary style. We have also been checking out Ikea. The kitchen cabinets have me sold but am wondering about their furniture. Anyone have experience?

I agree with PP stay away from Ashley. We bought a reclining "theater style" sofa and chair. The entire end of the sofa broke-less than two years old. We sold it cheap on Craigslist to get rid of it. :sad2:

We don't' have any "major" Ikea furniture but we do have smaller pieces. We have a tv stand, bookcase and toy box. They are okay. Nothing great. The tv stand didn't go together 100% right and you can see the doors are off a bit but it's in the basement where only us family hangs out so we don't mind how it looks.
