My son just finished up his hockey season on Sunday (won gold in the championship!). This weekend on our team's website we saw an announcement that the hockey association has decided to NOT participate in the larger association that they have been part of for, well, forever. Instead, the executive made an arbitrary decision to form their own league, so instead of playing teams from all over the district and travelling to different arenas, we will play only other teams from our league. Basically, they will play the same half dozen teams over and over again through out the season.
Maybe this is a good idea, maybe not, but the parents are furious at the high-handedness of the executive in making a decision of this magnitude without, at the very least, consulting the parents who actually pay for this league!!
How dare they decide for me how my money must be spent? The hockey world is so political they will not allow your child to play out of district, so we either suck it up and pay our registration for the "new" league, or he can't play at all...anywhere.
They tabled the motion back in February, never announced it or put it to a public vote. 12 people made the decision for 1400 players....that's not right. They were inundated with phone calls and emails when the announcement was made so they had an "emergency" parent's meeting last night. What a JOKE! They were asked point blank by a coach why they didn't at least give the coaching staff a heads up so they could prepare the parents (coaches were taking the flack from parents as they are the buffer between the parents and the league). No answer to that, just hid behind the "well, you elected us to do a job...if you don't like it vote us out at the next AGM". So, basically the meeting was a "too bad, so sad"...it's done and there's nothing you can do about it.
I just don't understand why they couldn't have had the meeting 2 months ago, present their arguments and let us vote! Without our registration dollars there is no league, and I am very angry that we were not allowed a voice in the decision making process.
I wish my son didn't love hockey so much, I'd tell them where they could stick their registration.
