Heard this on the radio today...
A young woman was standing in line at a department store check out, waiting to pay for a small purchase.
An elderly lady in front of her kept turning around and staring right at her.
After a couple of minutes of this, the young woman asked the lady if something was wrong.
"Oh, I don't mean to be rude", the old woman replied, "It's just that you look exactly like my own daughter. She passed away just six weeks ago in an auto accident."
"Oh, I terribly sorry !", the young woman said, "Is there anything I can do for you ?"
"Well, I know this will sound strange, dear," the older woman continued, "But, would it be all right if I called you by my daughter's name ? Just one time, just to get a chance to say the goodbye that I never got to say ? Her name was Sally."
Well, the younger woman thought it was a strange request, but after thinking about it for a second agreed.
"Oh, thank you so much !" said the older woman.
And so, the women turned toward each other.
"Goodbye, Sally, goodbye my love..." Said the old lady with a tear in her eye.
"Um, Goodbye Mom, I love you..." Said the younger girl.
And with that, the elderly woman left the store.
As "Sally" was ringing up her purchase, feeling pretty darned good about herself, the cashier said, "That'll be $550"
"$550 ??!! I only have these two things !"
"I know", replied the cashier, "Your Mom said you were paying for her !"
