Are you familiar with the Bing website?

As far as I can tell, it is a site owned by Microsoft which provides maps and other information. It used to be called Live Search, but now it’s called Bing.

One of the features I like on Bing is the Bird’s Eye View.

The maps of Disney World offer these feature.

Here’s a link to the site, in case you want to give it a try yourself (click on "Bing")

Bing

I go on Bing from time to time to study things from the air.

The Fort Wilderness aerial photos had not been updated for a while.

But, recently, I noticed that there are new images for parts of the Fort.

What is interesting is that depending on what direction you view the aerial shot from, sometimes you get an older image, and sometimes you get a newer image.

Let me show you what I mean.

Let’s look at the Meadow Swimming Pool.

When you look at the pool from this angle, you see the pool as it used to be before the 2009 update:

MeadowPool1.jpg

But, if you ask Bing to rotate around to look from another direction, this is what you see:

MeadowPool2.jpg

Here we see that the pool construction is under way. You can see that the slide and water tower are in place, but that there still is no water in the pool, and the splash zone work is just beginning. Based on the state of the construction completed at this time, we can safely say that this image was taken in mid-March, 2009.

As we continue to look at the pool from different angles, this is what we see:

MeadowPool3.jpg

MeadowPool4.jpg

MeadowPool41.jpg

I don’t know about you, but I find this interesting to look at.

We can do the same thing over on the 600 loop.

Here is how things looked before the bulldozers arrived:

600Loop1.jpg

In case you need some help orienting yourself, that is the Meadow Trading Post at the top of the photo, and the Bike Barn would be at the left. This is how things looked before the 600 loop expansion.

In this photo, we can see that the construction is well under way. It looks like the new road is in, and the pads have been poured:

600Loop2.jpg

Here is a closer look from that angle:

600Loop21.jpg

And, here we are looking at it from another angle (600 loop is now on the left, Bike Barn on the right):

600Loop3.jpg

When we rotate around to another angle, the construction has not yet begun:

600Loop4.jpg

We can do the same thing at the dog park. Here’s how things used to look:

dogpark.jpg

Now, from this view, you can see the outline of the fence and also the new sidewalk:

dogpark2.jpg

Here’s a closer look from the same angle:

dogpark21.jpg

When we look from this direction, we see the dog park:

dogpark3.jpg

But, from this angle, we can’t see the dog park yet (but you can clearly see the raised area which remains from the Fort Wilderness Rail Road:

dogpark4.jpg

The last area we will look at on this post is the secret area up at the front of the Fort. This is an off-limits area just off the Fort entrance. This is the Area 51 of the Fort. Whatever they do back there besides keep the golf carts, it’s a big secret. Do not ask any questions about it. It used to be just a bunch of modular buildings, with no apparent connection to the Fort. But, they use part of it now to store the rental golf carts. This is the area I am talking about:

VDU.jpg

In the photo above, we can see that there are modular buildings in this area. There is no space for golf carts, just car parking. Same thing in these photos:

VDU4.jpg

VDU41.jpg

In these views, however, we can see that the modular buildings have been removed, and space has been created for the golf cart operation:

VDU1.jpg

VDU2.jpg

VDU3.jpg

You may notice that there is prep work being done in the three photos above for installation of new modular units. Those units have, in fact, been installed, but the installation was done after these images were taken, so we will have to wait until Bing updates again before we can see the new modular units from the air.

If you find anything interesting on Bing, why don’t you share it here?

TCD, always enriching the lives of others. :thumbsup2

Shan also. :thumbsup2

Here are some from 2010

Those are good! Are those from Bing? Obviously, they are more up to date than the ones I posted. And they also are from directly overhead. Where can we see images like this? I'll bet you could get a shot of the hot tub at the cabin pool.

Your photo of Area 51 shows the new hangers for the black helicopters.

Ask and you shall receive

We all have our little secrets..

Hey . . .

You are good!

And fast!

But, there's a shadow over the hot tub. Do you have one from another time of day?

And, please tell me your secret.

I promise I won't tell anyone. (crosses fingers)

Those photos are great!

Do you see anything interesting going on over at the Four Seasons resort being built next to the Fort?

BayLakeCampers, you beat me to it I was going to show this site too.

TCD, I wasn't able to find my pictures of the swamp trail boardwalk but check out this 2010 aerial. I'm not sure but that could be a boardwalk:

I thought you might be interested to know that there is a feature in GoogleEarth called "Historical Imagery". Along the top of the screen is a row of button and the middle one looks like a clock. If you click it, a slider will pop-up and it will have tick marks along the slider. Each tick mark is a different set of imagery for the area you have in view. You can slide to the left (earlier in time) and then back right (more current). Right now, most of the older imagery is lower res (or even B&W), but this will become more and more useful in the future. As of now, the oldest imagery of the Fort I've found was from '95. Anyhow, thought you might find it interesting (or, at least, I did!)

Thanks, Shan-man. The old imagery on Google Earth is too grainy for me. It is really hard to make things out. But, I will poke around on there a bit and see what I can find.

The secret is the Orange County GIS web site

here is a Link http://paraster.ocpafl.org/Webmap2/default.aspx

No other angles. sorry.

Just a lot of grading and some new roads. I think with the way the economy is they have slowed down construction.

THANK YOU!! for that link. Those maps are great. I love the fact that you can stay in the same spot and click for older images. Pretty neat! And the 2010 images are very clear!

BayLakeCampers, you beat me to it I was going to show this site too.

Thanks for posting this! I just sent some time on the OCPA site looking at that area. I can see the boardwalk along the lake bank as late as 2007, and then it is gone. I do remember that there was a boardwalk that went off into the wooded area in the general area that you have marked, but I don't think it was that far from the lake. It is really hard to tell from the aerial photo. That does look like some type of rectangular shaped structure. Maybe I will have to head back out into the swamp?

I was looking at Discovery Island. Boy, there are still a lot of things there.

I thought I would take a look at the other islands in Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon to see what I could see.

Check this out.

There are a few islands in the Seven Seas Lagoon that the ferry that runs from the TTA passes. These are visible from the Poly and GF. Look at the island closest to the MK in this photo:

7seasisland.jpg

Now, let's zoom in a bit:

7seasisland1.jpg

7seasisland2.jpg

What is that on the island?

Something to do with fireworks, maybe?

Anyone know?

TCD

That's where they set off the fourth of july and new years fireworks from. Sorry I don't have pictures on the computer of it. But those two times, they do a full 360 of fireworks. During the Parties, it's more like a 180 of fireworks.

But the fireworks set off behind the castle (really small world) are duplicated on that island. Then there's about 9-12 perimeter set ups that do periodic shoots. The smaller ones are generally mobile on little carts that they pull with a pargo. Although some harder to reach ones (like the ones next to othe canal across from the roundhouse) are left there all the time. That one you can see if you take world drive all the way around the park. And just past the stop sign, the main set up is on the left, and on your right is where you'll see the small mobile ones sitting on the side of the road.

I'll make mine available once complete. Warning though, it's gonna be BIG. It is already 250MB and I still have to add more width! Sure, it'll get a lot smaller when compressed, but you'll still have to be able to open 250MB+ in memory to view it. It's gonna make a great poster, though.

ShantaClausSm.png

Shan-man, that's awesome I look forward to the poster. I'm gonna plot me one out on our hi-res plotter at work. :)

Shan-man- That is cool!

It will be interesting to see the finished product.

The distance from the Settlement to the Outpost looks greater on the photo than it does on the maps that they provide at the Fort.

This will be a neat thing to be able to look at and study.
