Fun things to do in Manhattan?!?

I'm thinking about taking a ONE day trip, yes you read correctly, to Manhattan to celebrate my bday. What are the must sees (and preferably free or inexpensive) things to see/do around Times Square?? Where would you recommend for a (again, inexpensive) birthday meal? Also, whats the best way to get from LaGuardia to Times Square? Thanks!

Well, it is fun to just walk around Times Square, but I think going there at night is the best time to go. There is just something about all those bright lights that I love seeing! One place I think that is really fun, but it isn't free and not really cheap, but not too expensive is Madame Toussauds (Sp?) wax museum.

Ellen's Stardust Diner for dinner...the servers sing Broadway tunes for you and the food is cheap(er) than you'll find anywhere else in the city!

5th Ave. has fun shopping including a great Disney store, walking through Central Park--agree with pp, just looking around!

I think just walking around Manhattan is one of the best things to do. Go to a few museums....walk around FAO Schwartz....so many things to stop and check out.

find a corner restaurant, get a nice window seat and look at the freaks , NYC is the place to be for people watchers

shopping in Little Italy, Chinatown and Canal Street are my favorite things to do. A tour of the NBC building is also fun ...where's the damn dancing banana
