I will be traveling with my 3 kids down 95 from NJ. Since NJ only has full service gas stations I am afraid I never learned how to pump gas. I don't remember any full service gas while traveling with my husband. What do you think?

I grew up in NJ, just moved. I honestly don't remember if they had full service when we drove because we always just went to the self serve. *If* they do I think it might be more expensive. Don't worry though if you have to pump it yourself, the pumps are all labled with easy to follow directions. Tip bring some hand wipes/baby wipes with you to wipe off the gas smell on your hands. If you need any help just ask I'm sure they get a lot of NJ people that haven't pumped gas before.

Have fun!

I am from NJ as well. Don't feel to bad, the first time we drove to Florida I had to ask someone how to get the gas cap off.

We drive to WDW from Maryland twice a year and have never encountered a full service gas station. Why don't you learn to pump gas now, before your trip? Unless you are leaving first thing tomorrow I'm sure you will have plenty of time to learn. The directions are easy to follow and written on all the gas pumps.

Stations with full-service are few and far between. There might be the occasional gas station with a full-service island, but not many. You might want to drive across the border and practice before your trip.

Question for New Jerseyites -- why does NJ have all full-service gas stations? I'm sure it's a law, but what's the story behind that particular law? This is purely to satisfy my own curiosity. First time I drove in NJ and stopped for gas, I got out of the car and started pumping my own gas. The attendant came over and said he'd get it, and I tried to explain to him I had it under control but he was insistent, so I let him (to be honest, I just didn't want to pay extra for full service). The second time I found out it's all full serve in NJ.

Terry,
I am going to try to see if I can get a nice attendant to let me do it BUT they are very adament about you not touching the gas since it is against the law and most gas jockeys are just kids.

Matthew, (love the name, husband and son are Matthew's)

I think the idea behind the law is that it is unsafe to do certain things while getting gas. Such as getting in and out of the car. Static electricty has been proven to cause blow ups at the tanks.

Irene,
Can't wait for June!!!!!

I lived in NJ my whole life, up until 2 months ago and I have no idea why the laws that way, no one I know, knows either. We all laugh about it because it's always been that way and we don't know why. Until I went to school in Fl I had no idea that people actually pumped their own gas in other states-lol.

I know a few politicians in recent years have tried to have the law changed and failed because people just don't want it changed. In polls people cited loss of jobs and the fact that they just like having only full serve. It's funny because historically we've had pretty low gas prices in the state even though we have only full serve too.

Sorry I can't give you a more "official" answer. ;)

Here in Massachusetts I know of one town, Weymouth where I work, that is all full serve and has the some of the cheapest prices I can find. I once asked DH's uncle about the law and he said the fire chief was adamant about it not being changed. I guess he figures people will cause more fires if they pump their own gas? Of course people who live in Weymouth like the full serve because the prices are generally the same as self-serve.

As for the OP, if the attendants won't let you actually "try" pumping the gas, maybe they can give you a lesson so you'll know what to do. It's really not that hard, just don't keep filling the tank after it shuts itself off, that means it's full.

You better figure it out. I cannot recall the last time I saw a full service gas pump in GA, SC, or Florida. It is not that hard, just read the instructions.
