FTD flowers...what the heck?

I got an email this morning from FTD for Valentine flowers - $14.99 (Half price) - my SIL who is deployed asked me to send flowers to his wife for their anniversary, Feb. 9th. I wanted them for their anniversary, not for Valentines day, and so the delivery date was the week before it. So I fill out all the information...and the total comes to almost $48!!!... ...they charge 29.99 for the plant...then deduct 15.00...and then they add a $29.99 "service fee"...and then of course there's a $3.00 other fee. What's with that? I thought I could do this on my budget...but not at this rate....now what do I do?? I feel so bad.. .if I lived near her, I could arrange for a local florist I guess, but being 1100 miles away I can't do that....any suggestions? TIA - Barb

Call a local florist directly and do it over the phone...much cheaper!

Proflowers.com. They have a Grower's Choice bouquet for only $19.99; free vase, and certain dates have free shipping (February 7th is one...two days early but hey, it's free!).

I've received flowers from them many times, and they've always been beautiful. They don't always look the best RIGHT out of the box but once they've been placed back in water for an hour or so they are gorgeous; they've always lasted at least a week for me.

I agree with calling florist local (look them up on Google or yellowpages.com) to the person you want to give flowers. Tell the florist your budget and they'll put together something for you. You'll save $$ by cutting out the middleman (FTD just contracts out with local florists and takes a cut for doing so). They'll just take your credit card info. over the phone for the purchase. I've done this several times to send flowers to my Mom.

When I send flowers I always look up a local florist (where I am sending them) and give them a call. It's much cheaper that way.

I have used Proflowers several times and they are great. I have had problems with FTD a couple of times. FTD just contacts a local ( to where they are delivered) florist to make the arrangements. A couple of times they have picked a florist that did not do a great job. That has just been my experience.

Just go to Yahoo local (or google), then type in "florist" and their zip code, and it'll list a bunch of florists in that area. Usually some will have ratings (or you can ask around here if you tell us where the delivery area is), so you can pick a good place.

I'm friends with a local florist, and because of that, I never use those national chains - you get much better service (and flowers IMHO) for less money.

Heck - I ordered a pizza to be delivered to a friend in Phoenix from a local pizzeria near her, even though I'm in PA... It can be done!! (I was paying my bet from the Cardinals/Eagles game. )

I'm going to agree with both Proflowers and calling a local florist. Proflowers are shipped overnight straight from the growers but you do have to arrange them yourselves. I've often called a local florist and have given them my budget (i.e $25) and what the occasion is and they have put together some beautiful arrangements for me.

Don't forget, if there are grocery stores in town, they often have a floral shop. I've called the HyVee where my grandmother lives and they will do an arrangement and deliver it.

The few times I've sent anyone flowers I called a local florist directly. The florist near my mom is an FTD florist so I called and asked if they could make a bouquet "like" the one I saw on the FTD site. It was exactly the same and $20 cheaper!
