If you book a seat in row one, where do you put your personal item since there is no seat to put it under?

You place it in the overhead bin - the same as on Southwest. You are allowed to retrieve the item after the flight has reached cruising altitude, but must return it to the overhead, when the announcement is made to prepare for landing.

Often, the next available overhead compartment is in row 2 and beyond. This can create an issue when you arrive since others will stand up once the plane has parked at the gate and it won't be easy to walk back a few rows to retrieve your carry-on/personal item. I have seen this happen several times to people who don't realize how this all works and they might get stuck until many others exit the airplane. I would suggest you book a seat in row other than row 1 (i.e. row 2 and beyond) to avoid this issue.

I avoid row 1, on any airline, because I like to keep my backpack with my stuff under the seat in front of me. I just booked Frontier for February and took row 3, still in the extra space zone. (ability to reserve these is included in their bundles)

This was equated to Southwest, as both Southwest and Frontier have a single cabin with one class of service. In the past, I have flown on airlines with more than one class, where pax in the first row of Coach were allowed to stow a personal item under the seat in front of them, in Business Class. Obviously, there was no bulkhead wall - just a curtain divider.

So did they rename "Row 1" when they got to Coach? I doubt it. It probably started at "row 5, 10, whatever". It's not a big leap to imagine the OP is talking about a bulkhead seat since they say "there is no seat". No matter what airline you are on, whether they have different seating classes or not, if there is no seat in front of you to put your personal bag under, it will need to go in the overhead bin.
