Frontier Airlines Email Assigning Seats

Has anyone recently flown Frontier and received an email 3 days prior to departure assigning seats? Our reservation said that seats would be assigned at check-in. Interestingly, the seats that were assigned were all separate and in rows not pictured on the seat map for our flight. I chatted with an agent who said that the reason our assigned seats weren't on the seat maps was because they changed the aircraft. Two of the seats assigned were middle seats in Row 41 which the agent said is the last row. When I asked if the plane was full, the agent said no. There are still many seats available for purchase on the seat map. My thought is that by sending that email early, Frontier is trying get passengers to panic buy reserved seats. Any thoughts or advice?
(We have flown Frontier before and we never had seats assigned by email.)
 
I agree with your conclusions that they're trying to get people to buy seats ahead of time by splitting them up.

When I read your post and got to the part that said three days early and separated, this was my immediate thought too.
 
Making me want to fly with them less and less. They have been my go-to airline for quite some time but now that they cancelled the direct flights from my local airport and the times they fly out of the bigger airport, 2 hours away, are not desirable (get to MCO late at night and leave to come back super early). :(
 

Update:

Yesterday, I chatted with a Frontier agent via Facebook Messenger and asked them to unassign my seats. I checked in on the app as soon as it opened and got 2 seats together. One of the seats is the seat I was assigned previously and the other was the seat next to it. My daughter also requested that her seats get unassigned and today she was also able to get 2 seats together!
