We are thinking of staying at Universal for a few nights in Oct. I thought I read somewhere that if you stay at the resort you get to the front of the line if you show your room key. Is this true? If so that sounds like a great reason to stay there.

Absolutely correct. Stay at one of the three Universal Orlando Loews Hotels and get FOTL access.

A great perk.

FOTL is terrific! We have stayed on property 3 times and just love this perk! There's no need to rush to the parks in the morning. With FOTL you can walk right up the to the front and ride in a matter of minutes.:D

It's not exactly the Front of the line, but rather, a different line that lets you bypass the regular (also called "standby") line.
In the busy afternoon, the wait can be 15 minutes for the major attractions, as you are waiting in line with other hotel guests. But yes, most of the time, you walk right on while others wait an hour.
When FOTL first started, USF only had 2 hotels, and many didn't know about it, so most of the time, you went to the Front of the line by default.
Lately, the hotels have called it unlimited express, but people around here still call it FOTL.

NLK-
This won't work for HHN but they sell a FOTL booklet with express to all of the attractions.
FOTL is the main reason many of us abandoned WDW for USO.

I'm sorry it's been a long day, can you please tell me what HHN is?
