Hello all,
some advice please,
I had booked to go to NYC for my partners birthday at the end of the month( apartment in Chelsea booked, flight paid for etc) and we have split up !- it has been on the cards for a while and i guess i was silly to book and pay for it- but hey, you live in hope!

so, my question is- should i go ahead and go on my own?.
I travel regually with just my son but never alone.
I have been in NY about 12 years ago but was with friends.

I am travelling from the UK and staying 4 nights( thur-mon)- also booked Nobu for Saturday pm and birthday cake to be delivered( you can guess what i'll be living on!!)
The tickets are non returnable and can't chnage the name( as have plenty of girlfriend who would love to come!) and would lose $200 on the apt.

I feel like i should go( pride as much as anything!) but also feel a little scard! and wonder if i will look like a sad person( sat having dinner alone etc!!)
any advice would be great
Thanks
Ruth

I'm sorry to hear about your break up. :grouphug:

I would still go to NYC, though! You can just kind of "lose" yourself in the city and have a lot of time to reflect and recover.

It might not be the ideal vacation you were hoping for, but there is so much to see and do - you could keep really busy and do things your own way.

Good luck to you, and I hope you enjoy your trip if you decide to go.

Yes, do go. I've gone all over NYC by myself. There's lots of stuff to do. I wouldn't dine at a "fancy" resturant, but there are lots of cute little coffee shops where you would feel comfortable.

I did the opposite, went from NYC to the UK alone & had a blast. I even took the Chunnel on the spur of the moment to Paris to go to the Louvre. I couldn't have done that had I been with someone.

Because NYC is considered one of the biggest metropolises in the world, it doesn't have the focus of attention that a smaller, more rural or family-type of place has. Like you might be out of place going to WDW alone. NYC has 8 million people. With that many people, others will be too self-involved to be paying attention to you (in a negative way. :)) We natives all don't walk around pairs. :teeth:

People do things alone here all the time. There are people who just got out of work, or have to go back to work after dinner & eat by themselves. There are business people who come for business and want to treat themselves to a show, a concert or what NYC has to offer & go alone. We NYers go to things all the time alone if friends don't share the same interests or can't get the night off.

To keep from feeling uncomfortable eating out, Just bring a good magazine or book with you, or a notebook to journal & write down your experiences. This way, you can keep occupied while waiting for your food, or while eating. When your face is buried in a book, your eyes won't be darting around looking for something to do.

Magazines tend to lie flat, so you can still be skimming the page while eating. A notebook might suggest to others that you are still "at work" and writing ideas down.

Use this experience to nurture & treat yourself in your aloneness after your break-up. It's a new beginning for you. :cheer2: What a great place to start - in the best city in the world! :cool1:

Oh, and if you need a referral for a Tracfone prepaid cellphone to call the UK & U.S in the four days you are here, I can send you one. Just PM me for details. You can have the phone mailed to your Chelsea apartment. Tracfone recently announced there are no additional overseas charges for the UK & many other destinations. We can get you set up with about 290 minutes for $19.99 USD (or 370 Minutes for $35.)
