I was really looking forward to this dinner, mostly because I secretly referred to this meal as my "mystery" ADR. I didn't real know what to expect since I never hear a lot of people raving about the Flying Fish. Not that I've read bad comments. I just haven't read much about the place...period.
I was also looking forward to snooping around the boardwalk. The last time we were there was in 06. It was November and it was dark when we arrived. Enough said - I wanted to see the Boardwalk Hotel in the day time.
So the self-park lot at the Boardwalk is just were you would expect it to be - in Tim-buk-tu. Either there or its next-door neighbor - tim-buk-three. I begged Denny to find the absolute closest parking space. My feet were killing me and I was trying to wear my black sandals again. Since we were eating at mostly signature restaurants, I was trying to dress a tad nicer. Tonight I wore a black skirt, which was pretty casual. But I tried to dress it up a bit with a fancier top. Of course, I didn't want to look really stupid wearing my brown
crocs. So I packed them for later, because it would be dark by the time we went to watch Illuminations. By night fall, no one would be looking at my feet. But in the day time, with those crocs on, I looked like a perfect candidate for "What not to Wear". I could just picture Stacy and Clinton jumping out of the bushes.
So steady yourself for some pictures of the Boardwalk......
After we walked through the ginormous self parking lot, then the valet parking lot, then across the street, then past some DVC villas (I think), we finally saw this on the horizon......
Ahhhhhh, getting closer......
Be still my aching feet, we are almost there.........
Almost to the door of the Flying Fish....
Look....that is DH standing next to the DVC kiosk. I think he really does want to more more points. ahhhhhhh!
We were greated by a lovely CM as soon as we entered. Here is a view of the restaurant from the small entrance area:
I have been trying to figure out how to describe the decor of the Flying Fish. I just can't seem to come up with the right words. Art Deco, maybe? Early 90's maybe? I don't know. It was just sort-of strange. The theme was fish - fish everywhere. Scales everywhere.
The floor in the entrance way....
The ceiling (even LL must admit that these are some strange light fixtures....)
The kitchen....
The bar....
The scales....
More ceiling.....
A flying fish.....
If you hate fish, I mean really hate fish....this is probably not the best place to eat.
Our waiter was really great. He offered to take our picture. Yes - I know -its not really a smile. But remember, I WAS in pain. That must count for something...... I am sort-of smirking.
We started dinner with drinks. DH had some type of dark beer and I had a blue moon with orange slice. At home I recently had a blue moon with a shot of some type of blueberry liquor in it. It was really good. I forget what it was called, but I liked. Wouldn't mind having one right now. Sorry, I digress...
For appes we each had the crab cake. Denny wanted to compare tonight's crab cake to his Narcoossee's crab cake.....
I think he liked this one the best. It was quite good and a lovely presentation. So, hmmmmm, even though I was surrounded by scales everywhere I looked, and I felt like the restaurant was a bit small, the food was turning out to be quite good.
My entree was the wood-grilled scallops.......
Here is the description from the menu:
Oak-grilled Hand-harvested Maine Scallops -- English Pea, Pecorino, Basil and Mascarpone-laced Risotto di Carnarolli, Prosciutto di Parma Cracklins $36.00
Denny's entree...
And the description:
Oak-grilled North Atlantic Bay of Fundy Salmon - sauerkraut-brandade torta, rainbow chard, Blue Lake beans, and vermouth-golden raisin caper butter emulsion $36.00
Oh....by the way....here's the description of the crab cakes:
Flying Fish Cafe Crisp Jonah Lump Crab Cake - savory vegetable slaw, roasted red pepper coulis, ancho chili remoulade $16.00
Now I am being quite sincere when I say that my scallops were absolutely , hands-down, the best scallops I have ever had. I loved the oak grilled flavor. They were sooooooo tasty. As much as I think the ambiance of the Flying Fish leaves something to be desired, this was definately my favorite meal of the trip. I barely had room for dessert, but I forced myself to have a few bites of this.....
Gingersnap-crusted Deep-dish Apple Tart - Almond cream, morello cherry coulis, cinnamon anglaise, maple tuile and rum raisin ice cream $8.00
And, of course....Denny's dessert:
I do not see a description of his cheescake on the menu, so I will just let the picture speak for itself.
Anybody hungry yet????? I was so stuffed after this meal. Thank goodness my skirt was a tad loose.
At the conclusion of dinner we were presented with two glasses of complimentary champagne......
So, another lovely meal and my favorite food of the entire trip. I would go back in a heart-beat just to taste those fabulous scallops. And for the record, Denny enjoyed tonight's entree much better than his scary fish encounter at Narcoossee's.
When we left dinner I quickly changed into my crocs. It was just starting to get dark as we stepped out onto the boarwalk. I have room for two more pictures, so here they are:
When I return....darkness descends over the boardwalk, illuminations, and the return of "Oh my Aching Feet"
