Frogg Toggs - what am I missing?

After reading tons of glowing reviews of Frogg Toggs on these boards, I decided to grab a few of the Chilly Pads for our upcoming August trip. This past weekend, as my son and husband were changing two tires in the sweltering PA heat, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to road test the Toggs.

So I cut one in half lenthwise, wet the two pieces down and slung one around each of their necks and tucked the ends into their T-shirts. 5 minutes later they were both back in the house telling me to get those things off of them! :confused3

I have to admit they do feel kind of rubbery and I'm not sure how comfy they are, at least around the neck. So for the believers out there, how do you wear your Frogg Toggs? :)

I wet mine the night before a round of golf, and store it in the fridge overnight. That way it's really cold the next day, when I'm playing golf in the heat. I love mine, but don't drape it over my neck the whole time I'm playing. I use mine like a rag, and just wipe my face, neck and arms down with it.

My daughters use them when they play softball tournaments in the heat. I wet them with cold water & then keep them in a plastic baggie in a cooler. They wipe their faces & put them around their necks while they're in the dugout. It cools them off a bit. However, they lose their "cool" fairly quickly so they pop them back in the cooler when they go out on the field. We have never used them for anything else. I can't imagine walking around WDW with one around my neck.

I prefer to lay mine on my chest or back under my shirt. And I like really cold water the best for soaking the togg.

Exactly what I do every night. I am a mailman and every little but helps beat the heat. I think some people expect these things to work like air conditioning :rotfl2: :lmao:

But they hold a lot of water and they do help cool you off for little bit after you use them. But they are not some miracle rag.

You used them the same way we did. It may be that moving the way you have to when changing tires causes them to, ahem... rub them the wrong way. You might try them again in a more WDW-like mode by going for a walk, if they haven't already written them off completely.

I used mine this weekend... Once out on the boat in 90° heat and today with 100° heat indices (while I was cutting the lawn.) Worked like a charm. Only one side stays cool, though. And like others have mentioned, you have to move it around occasionally. I take mine off for a second, shake it around, and it's cool again. While I was cutting the lawn today (1.5 hours), I would get a little chill when placing it back on my shoulders after shaking it off. Gotta practice with it so you know how it works.

Thank you for posting this! I ordered 3 for my upcoming trip to Hershey in August and I was thinking the exact same thing! Someone mentioned it has two sides- so.... which side do you place against your skin?

I feel really silly asking this question, but you say you cut it lengthwise....should I cut it so that the two halves become really long and narrow or more like a square?

Both ways! I have one cut into long strips that we drape around our necks and DH has one cut into squares that he takes out of his golf bag and uses to wipe his face.

I bought two and cut them the long way. DS will wear his around his neck but DD will only for a few seconds. You wear them textured side down. We wore them upon leaving the waterpark at Sea World and it did help us stay cool on our trek to the car.

You also need to flip them kind of frequently, at least in the Mississippi heat and humidity. The side next to your skin will heat up, and the side facing away will cool down thanks to evaporation, so flipping it will keep a cool side against you.

My order of FTs arrived today! I took one out of the container and realized how HUGE it is! I draped it around my shoulders and I was like wearing a towel around my neck- all big and bulky! I guess cutting it in half reduces some of the bulkiness, but it still seems so long. Has anyone cut it into quarters to reduce the bulkiness? Is it still as effective? I can't imagine my DD8 wearing it as is.... it would be down to her hips!

I actually bought one last weekend when I was out getting football gear for my ds12. We use it like a towel, to wipe down face, neck, arms, etc. I'm going to get another and cut it in half for WDW. It does help my dd keep cool (she has trouble with body temp regulation) so the one I got is technically hers. She took it to work and showed her coworkers and they all went and bought them.

She did take it with her this evening in the car and it didn't stay cool long (no a/c and temps in the mid 90's with high humidity).

Exactly!

If they have to be placed in a cooler, or wet with chilled water, and lose their coolness quickly, what's the big whoop about them? Sounds like a plain old facecloth would do the same thing, and not cost so much money?

Quality question..we have 2 Chilly Pads. We use them when we work out and bought them a few weeks ago so we could try them out before our WDW trip next week. Anyway, today I washed them, no bleach but the yellow one lost most of its color while the blue one looks exactly the same. Has this happened to anyone else. I think the yellow one may be faulty. I really doubt Walmart is going to let me return it. Frustrated.

While it surely increases the cooling effect, it's not necessary to chill them. They work through evaporation, so all it takes is to keep them wet. Their absorbency retains the liquid water to be evaporated slowly without dripping like a normal towel might. If you don't expect the cooling of a personal air conditioning system and take them for what they are, a simple and lightweight way to mitigate the effects of extreme heat, then you are much more likely to appreciate them. We found them to be more effective and easier to use than spray bottles or fans. We had two to rotate between the five of us and will have them on all future trips to hot weather locations.
