DD12 in the last year has gotten almost a halo of frizz around her head and thruout the hair. her hair is super thick (asian) and my stylist told me she has seen this in puberty where the hair starts to almost kink. it is making DD12 nuts.We have flat ironed it, used leave in conditioner, bought products to supposedly control the frizz. Nothing seems to work. Anyone have any exact product recommendations or general ideas? Thanks!:confused3

I just got Keratin done to my hair and it seems to have helped with my frizz a lot. I am concerned about how long it will last though. I only tried it because I got a groupon for it, but maybe you could shop around for a good price. They say with each Kertain treatment it gets better, a cumulative effect.

Lots of products including the oils.

My dd is using the Garnier Fructis new line with the argan oil in it, plus the conditioner and the serum. Then she flat irons on top of that.

When my daughter was going through the puberty frizzy hair thing, she finally had to learn to embrace the curl and quit trying to straighten it. The Garnier Fructis shampoos and conditioners seemed to calm it down the most, but when she used the straightener the hair just poofed up again. She learned to use products that worked with her curls and she focused on getting the hair to settle down and it worked out better for her. She's 17 now, and the last couple of years her hair has settled down and she can style it how she wants. Good luck!

expensive but the women I know with frizzy hair swear by the Brazilian blowout thing. Watch Groupon and Living Social. I see coupons on there all the time for it.

What products is she using? And when you talk about a halo of hair, do you mean curly hair, or frizzy straight hair?

OP here..Thanks for the replies thus far! DD is asian with poker straight thick hair. Never a problem. Since turning 12 it is like the hair on top of her head (I guess the newly growing in hair?) is just kinky and at all angles. If you follow her hair down her head to her shoulders it is in there too. In no way is it curly, just your typical coarse beautiful asian hair except for this new kinkiness. I am printing out all your replies to go over with her tonight. It is something that is driving her nuts! I so appreciate the suggestions! Now we are using John Friedman for frizzy hair but I just got it b/c the name had frzzy hair in it and said NEW product. I also use a serum that was really expensive that I put on when I am done drying the hair. To help weigh it down and give shininess....and a leave in John Friedman condition..

Don't know if it will help, but has she tried co-washing? (washing with conditioner). There was a thread somewhere on the Dis about it not too long ago. I've been doing it, and although I don't have totally frizzy hair, it's helped my hair to be very soft.

White Rain is the recommend product. I also got a great deal on Wen (google it - it's supposedly really good) through buying proactive products, and I'm currently using that too. When my good deal runs out though, I can't justify the price. White Rain conditioner does not have an ingredient (I can't remember what it is) that most shampoos and conditioners have. You scrub your scalp with the conditioner for a couple of minutes (it won't lather, but it will be very creamy), then I put more on the rest of my hair and let it all sit on the hair while your doing everything else in the shower. I then scrub the scalp again as I'm rinsing it all out. People swear by this method. I've been doing it for a couple of months, and I'm very happy with my hair.

It can't hurt to try it. Also, of course a good leave in conditioner afterwards is important. I've always liked frizz-ease products.

And every few days, a deep conditioning treatment that she leaves on for a while would probably help relax everything too.

If nothing works, I'd try a bit of a different hairstyle for now... wearing it partially up in some way, etc.

Good luck!

I have a Jap Fro so I know how she feels. Asian hair is different and requires different care. Brazillians, Keratins, etc. don't work on my hair, but Yuko System and Magic Straight do wonders.

For everyday care, Shiseido's Tsubaki system is really good.

Haircut/style really makes a difference as well. If you google Japanese hair cuts, you'll find a lot of razor-cut, layered styles. This will help her hair look a lot sleeker.

I think this was in reference to the Curly Girl method -- I haven't washed my hair with shampoo for over a year and a half, and I love how the frizz has gone. I'm not sure how it would do with the OP's situation, but it wouldn't hurt to try.

One thing, though, is to find a sulfate free shampoo if you do decide to keep washing with shampoo.

When you say the straight iron isn't working, do you mean it won't straighten the kinky hair at all? If not, maybe she needs a hotter iron. Or does it get straight but not stay straight? I don't know anything about Asian hair, but I know I get better results when I use a product like Rusk Str8 (which apparently has been renamed Rusk Thermal Flat Iron Spray.)

I didn't realize it was for curly hair... my hair is long and straight, and it's been great for my hair.

Those Brazilian and Keratin and whatever treatments can use dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde that end up aerosolized or absorbable. I wouldn't at all do that with a kid.

Also, those Freida frizz things are silicone and just leave a greasy mess, the 'weighing down' thing won't help - her hair is heavy now, is it not? Not helping, right?

I'd listen to the Asian posters, heh.

My Keratin was formeldahyde free. I think the Brazillian Blowout is the one with Formeldahyde.

Thank you Corgi Monster!!! And everyone else of course. I just ordered the Shiseido's Tsubaki system you recommended. Very cool that the entire bottle is written in Japanese but English instructions will be included I was told! :) I really appreciate the info and hopefully this will help. I started with the shampoo and conditioner. Is there another daily product you would use like spray or anything or do you think these 2 products will be enough to try for now?

The heat on the flat iron is a great question. I have it at 25...and never thought to change it. Is the higher the heat the less frizz? I kind of thought it would be the other way around?

Hair dyer make a difference? Asian friends out there do you use a certain hair dryer or setting, etc? Thanks so much!

The higher the heat, the straighter the hair gets and the better it stays straight. Think of it as ironing cotton on a too-low setting.

I use Pro Naturals Moroccan Oil Hair Treatment with Heat Protector which reduces the frizz in the hair, protects the hair from any damage, prevents split ends and leaves the hair soft, healthy, shiny and resilient. It works amazingly, I love it!! :) :goodvibes :thumbsup2
