does anyone know if friendship bread is safe? The one I was given is a starter...and you don't refrigerate it. It has one cup of milk added about half way thru and you still don't refrig it.

Wouldn't that be dangerous or am I missing something?

If you refrigerate it, it will die! It didn't kill the pioneers so you should be safe ;-)

I did try it once and failed miserably, so if anyone has a good starter recipe I'd love to have it (I'm too far away for anyone to pass me a cup).

I used a recipe similar to the first link (above) and never had a problem with it. It needs to 'ferment' a bit and you do bake it so it's safe.

The pioneers left their 'starters' out for many breads (such as sourdough), since the wild yeast floating in the air would get into the dough and make it ferment (and rise). Cool, hey? :teeth:
