reading other post made me have to write this

I have a friend that was having some money problems. He is an electrician so I offered him some side work. I just built a new garage. He wanted $1500 (just for labor) to help me wire everything. Told me if I hired someone else it would cost me $2000. so he was giving me a deal. I told him he was nuts. A week later he called and said he would do it for free
(Yea right! ) After about 10 minutes he tells me all I have to do is next year let him have a one bedroom for a week for free. I told him I had wiring covered but I will let him have room for $2200. said if he booked thru Disney it would cost him $2800 so I was giving him a deal. He then mentioned how it cost me nothing anyhow, So I offered to show him my canceled check for my points purchase. And I wanted to know what his idea of free is.
By the way another friend of mine did help me. Gave him $300. he did not want anything but I wanted to pay him something. Took us one weekend.

PS: if my friend would have just done it in the first place without trying to stuff his pocket, I would have given him the room for cost of dues

That's no friend. Dh is an electrician and you could imagine what people who barely know us ask of him that is why he will not do side jobs. But with that said he would never charge a true friend. see both of you paying "expenses would have worked out nicely. Whatever his was for the materials and your dues you would have both been happy but oh well.

Hi 3DisneyNuts,
I too am an electrician and it is amazing what people will ask you to do for them. When you have a full time job it's not so easy using your weekends to work on their homes and neglect your own. As my wife says "we don't ask them to come over and do human resources on their day's off". With your use of the term "side job", I was wondering if your husband is Local 3?

Mel&me,
If this guy was a real friend, I never would have charged him anything for labor. It might be time to cross him off the friend list. Unfortunately someone who will try to charge you an outrageous amount of money for labor and then try to get a free vacation that's worth even more instead is a user.

No he works for one of the largest non union shops on Long Island. They are still on the fence about going union or not. The weird thing is that his pay is above union scale and the benefits are good so they are always debating if it is good for their shop or not.
But he does work full time and it is amazing what people expect of him.
AND I totally agree with you on that part to Mel&me
That is no friend. 2k no less sheesh!

I agree with you there, I would never charge a friend either. My bud who did help me refused the money but I insisted. I originally ask my first bud because I knew he needed some extra cash to pay bills I have not spoke to him since, He actually accused me of trying to use him, and said what I wanted for room was ridiculous. Truth is if he helped me, instead of trying to take advantage of me I would have more than likely given the room to him.

Also with some people friend or family. You just don't get involved with when it comes to money. They will do anything for the buck and won't do a thing unless compensated.
I'm sure everyone has the misfortune of knowing persons of this caliber. You don't know who they are until you put cash on the table.
