Friendly reminder: Beware of Scammers

I just wanted to tell everyone about an encounter I had on VMK with a scammer just to remind everyone to be careful when you trade.

I was wearing my cowboy outfit, and a player told me he wanted to offer me tron stuff and a pirate costume for it. I entered into the trade window so he could show me what he had to offer. He asked me if I liked what he put into the trade boxes, but it was completely blank. I told him that I didn't see anything.

He then said to me, "Oh, that's because it's beta. It doesn't show up in the trade, but will show up an hour later."

So I replied, "So I give you my stuff, and then you give me nothing." I then quickly closed the trade box and clicked on him, followed by report.

He quickly exited the room when I called him on his scam, but he was too late--I had already his username in the report. I put in a call for help and did my best to explain the situation using the limited dictionary and limited space. They responded to send a letter to the black hole, and they would be able to track what I lost.

I wound up sending them another call for help and told them that I did not lose anything, but wanted to let them know so that they could do something before he tried that on another player. They replied that they would look into the player, so I hope that they reviewed the trade and did something about it.

At any rate, I just wanted to remind everyone to be careful in trades. You will always be able to see any item that the player is offering you in trade, and review them carefully before accepting it.

Remember, if a trade sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I think scamming must be the flavor of the day...seen quiet a few talking about different scams today on the pirate docks.

Sad to say, but as soon as this newest scam is (hopefully) stopped, they will come up with another. We all need to be very careful in trades. Thankfully, this scammer was up against the Boogies Girl and met his/her match!

Time to remind everyone, if you are not completely comfortable with a trade, CLOSE THE WINDOW. Do not trade with anyone you don't feel comfortable trading with.

Here is another scam that happened on Tuesday: My sis-in-law had a "friend" that she played many hours of POC with, for at least the last three months. They often traded and she trusted this guy. Well Tuesday he asked if he could "try on" her sparrow outfit. After much pleading she let him try on just the hat. Well, in a flash he was gone and had her deleted off his friend list. She went to his other character name but that name was banned!! She reported it to the black hole but has not heard a word. She is sick about this as this guy was her friend!!! So, beware...keep your old friends close but beware of any one new...sad to say, but even a trusted friend could do this to you...(I only wish I could say his name here!!!!)

See, now that is what is worrisome...the people who will actually invest time becoming your "friend"...because they know you will develop a level of trust. This is why I rarely trade with anyone and it's why I don't really talk on VMK. Perhaps that negates part of the purpose of the game, but I'm ok with that.

Another suggestion that goes with this... don't bother if the player tells you to come to their room, because they wll just bring you in and boot... not exactly a scam, but happened to me TWICE last night and it gets to be a pain in the neck.
