Hi all- I've got a close family friend - male- who is turning 50. His wife is hosting an Open House in the evening to celebrate with finger foods and drinks. Invitation says no gifts but would love to bring a gag gift. Any suggestions for a joke over the hill type gift? Thanks all.

It says no gifts. It means no gifts. The rules apply to all who attend. I do not like gag gifts. Many people do not like gag gifts. Gag gifts seem somehow hurtful as in, "Ha ha you are old." I think they make many, not all of course, very uncomfortable. Instead I would bring a card. Bring a funny card if you want.

As someone who just "celebrated" that wonderful age, please don't bring a gag gift. I know not everyone is the same but if you are determined to bring something, bring flowers or a plant. I would have been hurt with a gag gift which I don't like for anyone.

Totally agree! Gag gifts are in poor taste and 50 isn't THAT old!

A tiara for the birthday boy!

Everyone here saying "no gag gift" isn't the person who is having the birthday, though.

Our friend hit a large milestone and although "no gifts" is the understanding with this guy (friends for many years) it was TOTALLY appropriate for me to bring a large box wrapped prettily that contained Depends. And a bottled of booze.

I wasn't the only one and our friend of good humor kept telling his wife he had to stock of the Depends he got "because everyone knows how cheap he is" and there was laughter and mirth all around. Someone even tossed in a few lady Depends for a softer touch.

It was appropriate because we know our friend.

Some of the gag gifts he got:

Depends
Lady Depends
XXXLLL Depends
A home-made AARP card that was black: for memberships hitting the 50 year mark.
A toilet set riser
An engraved jar and those tablets for soaking your dentures
Red table wine that needed to be opened soon (since he won't be around long enough for it to age)

Those are some ideas to start.

My younger (by 4 years) sister somehow thought it would be funny to get me a gag gift for my 40th birthday.

Guess what she got for her 40th birthday? Yep--I gave her stupid gift back. :lmao:

Regifting with a purpose! ::yes::

I said no party and no gifts for 50. Then I was afraid that somebody would try to plan something anyway, so I planned my own birthday trip to Disney World.

I turned 50 at WDW too! My DH liked the idea so much, he requested the same for his 50th.:p

I will turn 50 at WDW in Dec. I decided I didn't want DH to go to the trouble and expense of a party......rather spend more money and take a trip together!

As for gag gifts.....many people dislike them but some do not. Only you know your friend. A slightly different idea is to get him 50 of something.....balloons, lottery tickets, bottles of beer......

Good luck with your choice!

I went to DisneyLand - we turned 50 the same year :).

OP - if you insist on a gift, and he's a good friend, donate something to a cause or charity about which he's passionate. Otherwise, "no gifts" means exactly that.

I turn 50 on my next birthday. I find truly clever gag gifts funny, but just something saying a person is old I don't find funny. Kind of overdone. And a huge waste of money to buy items a person isn't going to use. Now, if you wanted to bring me chocolate mousse since I'm old and don't have teeth....that I could live with;)

Besides, 50 isn't really old!

That's what I did! I was from S FL and had several friends meet us at OKW for a big ole 50th!
Then a DCL cruise (no friends invited on that!)

I also requested no gifts and bless their hearts, not one gag gift (I think a couple did bring a gift though).

Nix the gag gift.:thumbsup2

I was just thinking the same thing. Great minds......:) How about 50 of his favorite candies, nips. I loke the lottery tickets too.

I turned 50 at WDW last year. Also turned 47, 48, 49 and will turn 51 there next month. It really isn't my birthday unless I have breakfast with Donald Duck at Cape May Cafe!

Dh and I walked into our DSIL's 40th birthday carrying 40 helium balloons. She loved it!

When my next door neighbor turned fifty (it is a woman) her friends strung up a clothes line in her front yard with 50 old/used bras. The sign said, "Isn't it nifty Peggy is fifty lets all give her some support".

It made me laugh. Peg didn't care, she laughed too. The wind took a few and they lived in our respective trees a few weeks.

You could do the same for the guy with old jock straps---not sure where to get 50? or those support stockings old men wear.
