Hugh Jackman was born in Sydney, Australia on October 12th, 1968. While working on a communications degree at Sydney's University of Technology, he did some amateur theater productions and decided that he was much more interested in the stage than in journalism. After a one-year acting course and some time at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, he won a role in a popular Australian TV drama, Correlli, where he met his future wife, actress/director Deborra-Lee Furness.

Hugh starred as Gaston in the Australian production of Beauty and the Beast and as Joe Gillis in the Australian production of Sunset Boulevard.

A couple of small Australian movies and his stage experience eventually led to his winning the coveted role of Curly in Trevor Nunns 1998 Londons West End revival of Oklahoma!, a role that landed him a nomination for the Best Actor Olivier (the English equivalent of our Tony).

When fellow Aussie, Dougray Scott, was unable to film X-Men because of delays on MI:2, Hugh joined the cast as a last-minute replacement in the role of Logan/Wolverine.

This proved to be quite a breakthrough role for Hugh, and led to 2000-2001 roles in the John Travolta action film Swordfish
In Ashley Judds romantic comedy Someone Like You

And in the well-received Meg Ryan time-travel romantic comedy Kate & Leopold. Hugh received a Golden Globe nomination for his role of Leopold, Third Duke of Albany.

Jackman is currently filming X-Men 2 and his future commitments include a 2003 film entitled VanHelsing (by the director of the Mummy films about the famous vampire hunter from Bram Stokers book) and a possible 2003 appearance on the Broadway stage in a musical called Boy from Oz.
